Genesis, Pathways, and Terminations of Intense Global Water Vapor Transport in Association with Large-Scale Climate Patterns [PDF]
The CONNected objECT (CONNECT) algorithm is applied to global Integrated Water Vapor Transport data from the NASA's Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications – Version 2 reanalysis product for the period of 1980 to 2016.

Global drivers effect in multi-annual variability of runoff
Changes in runoff parameters are very important for Slovakia, where stream-flow discharges, being supplied by precipitation and groundwater runoff, are preferentially influenced by climatic conditions. Therefore, teleconnections between runoff parameters,

Interpreting SBUV smoothing errors: an example using the quasi-biennial oscillation [PDF]
The Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet (SBUV) observing system consists of a series of instruments that have been measuring both total ozone and the ozone profile since 1970.

Quasi-biennial oscillation and quasi-biennial oscillation--annual beat in the tropical total column ozone: A two-dimensional model simulation [PDF]
The National Centers for Environmental Prediction–Department of Energy Reanalysis 2 data are used to calculate the monthly mean meridional circulation and eddy diffusivity from 1979 to 2002 for use in the California Institute of Technology–Jet Propulsion

Quasi-biennial oscillation: laboratory experiments
The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) is an oscillation of the wind in the equatorial stratosphere. This wind is a mean flow induced by atmospheric waves, including internal gravity waves, which explain that the period (28 month) is not linked to any ...

Seismic sensitivity to sub-surface solar activity from 18 years of GOLF/SoHO observations [PDF]
Solar activity has significantly changed over the last two Schwabe cycles. After a long and deep minimum at the end of Cycle 23, the weaker activity of Cycle 24 contrasts with the previous cycles.

Windows of opportunity in subseasonal weather regime forecasting: A statistical–dynamical approach
This study explores how the atmospheric state at initialisation creates windows of opportunity for improving week 3 forecasts of weather regime activity. Greenland blocking activity increases following Madden–Julian Oscillation phases 7, 8, and 1 and weak stratospheric polar vortex states, revealing patterns exploitable by statistical models.

In this study, we evaluate the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signals in the two dominant temperature diurnal tides, diurnal westward wavenumber 1 (DW1) and diurnal eastward wavenumber 3 (DE3) on the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) scale (18–34 ...

Forecast verification using information and noise
Verification of weather forecasts is usually expressed in terms of total error metrics. This is useful for end users of the forecasts but does not allow evaluation of the intrinsic information content of the forecasts. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new total error decomposition into information and noise error measures, connect it to ...

It has been found that the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in the stratosphere have an important impact on the Madden Julian oscillation (MJO). In this study, we show that there is an obvious biennial oscillation in the tropical upper troposphere, which
