It has been found that the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in the stratosphere have an important impact on the Madden Julian oscillation (MJO). In this study, we show that there is an obvious biennial oscillation in the tropical upper troposphere, which

Abstract Gravity waves (GWs) are a fundamental driver of circulation, tracer transport, and mixing in the middle and upper atmosphere, but their treatment in global circulation models remains incomplete. In particular, standard parameterizations typically restrict propagation to the vertical and treat GW–turbulence interactions in only a rudimentary ...

Response of trace gases to the disrupted 2015–2016 quasi-biennial oscillation [PDF]
The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) is a quasiperiodic alternation between easterly and westerly zonal winds in the tropical stratosphere, propagating downward from the middle stratosphere to the tropopause with a period that varies from 24 to 32 ...

Abstract Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) strongly impact tropospheric weather, yet their accurate prediction remains a significant challenge. This study investigates the predictability of SSWs in the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with different vertical resolutions.

On the forcings of the unusual Quasi-Biennial Oscillation structure in February 2016 [PDF]
The westerly phase of the stratospheric Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) was reversed during Northern Hemisphere winter 2015/2016 for the first time since records began in 1953.

Abstract An intermediate complexity general circulation model is used to isolate the effect of vertical resolution and gravity wave parameterization on the simulated monthly quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO)‐tropical precipitation linkage. For low vertical resolution, the model is able to simulate QBO in the lowermost stratosphere, and its impact on the

Effect of the Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation on Carbon Monoxide in the Stratosphere
The interannual variability of tropical carbon monoxide from the Microwave Limb Sounder over 2004–2018 period is dominated by the quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO).

The stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation observed in the semidiurnal ground pressure data [PDF]
Ground pressure observations made at Macao (22°N, 113°E) from 1953 to 1991 are analyzed and compared with the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) data obtained during the same interval.

Quasi-biennial oscillation and summer southwest monsoon
Stratospheric circulation in the height range of 16 to 60 km in the equatorial region, has been studied using the rocket wind data of Thumba. It is inferred that the quasi-biennial oscillation in the lower and middle stratosphere are out of, phase by six months.
