Formation of a stable deacagonal quasicrystalline Al-Pd-Mn surface layer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We report the in situ formation of an ordered equilibrium decagonal Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal overlayer on the 5-fold symmetric surface of an icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn monograin.

Defects in Quasicrystals

open access: yes, 1989
There are several incentives to identify the analogues of dislocations and disclinations in quasicrystals. Penrose patterns are two-dimensional systems, and according to phase space counting fluctuations of the atomic displacements are so strong that exact long-range order is reduced to quasi-longrange order just as in periodic crystals.

Growth Modes of Quasicrystals [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2014
The growth of quasicrystals, i.e., aperiodic structures with long-range order, seeded from the melt is investigated using a dynamical phase field crystal model. Depending on the thermodynamic conditions, two different growth modes are detected, namely defect-free growth of the stable quasicrystal and a mode dominated by phasonic flips which are ...

Asymptotic estimates of large gaps between directions in certain planar quasicrystals

open access: yesJournal of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 111, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract For quasicrystals of cut‐and‐project type in Rd$\mathbb {R}^d$, it was proved by Marklof and Strömbergsson [Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN (2015), no. 15, 6588–6617; erratum, ibid. 2020] that the limit local statistical properties of the directions to the points in the set are described by certain SLd(R)$\operatorname{SL}_d(\mathbb {R})$‐invariant ...

Aperiodically ordered nano-graphene on the quasicrystalline substrate

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2020
Designing exotic structures in low dimensions is key in today’s quest to tailor novel quantum states in materials with unique symmetries. Particularly intriguing materials in this regard are low dimensional aperiodic structures with non-conventional ...

Tight-binding models in a quasiperiodic optical lattice

open access: yes, 2014
This paper describes how one can use four standing wave laser fields to realize a two dimensional optical quasicrystal with eight-fold symmetry, closely related to the well-known octagonal or Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystal.

Surfaces of quasicrystals

open access: yesComptes Rendus. Physique, 2014
The remarkable surface properties of quasicrystals have motivated extensive investigations of their intrinsic atomic and electronic structures. In this article, we summarize some of the main conclusions obtained so far. We also describe adsorption experiments where quasiperiodic surfaces are used as templates to grow thin films with novel structures ...

Use of Frit‐Disc Crucible Sets to Make Solution Growth More Quantitative and Versatile

open access: yesZeitschrift für anorganische und allgemeine Chemie, Volume 651, Issue 7, May 12, 2025.
The recent availability of step‐edge, frit‐disc crucible sets (generally sold as Canfield Crucible Sets or CCS) has led to multiple innovations associated with the group's use of solution growth. The use of CCS allows for the clean separation of liquid from solid phases during the growth process.

In situ TEM study of precipitation in a quasicrystal-strengthened AL-alloy

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2017
Precipitation kinetics and mechanisms within an Al-Mn-Be-Cu quasicrystal strengthened alloy at 300°C were studied using in-situ transmission electron microscopy. The alloy was cast into a copper mould.

Emergent Quasicrystalline Symmetry in Light-Induced Quantum Phase Transitions

open access: yes, 2019
The discovery of quasicrystals with crystallographically forbidden rotational symmetries has changed the notion of the ordering in materials, yet little is known about the dynamical emergence of such exotic forms of order.
