Stability of Two-Dimensional Soft Quasicrystals

open access: yes, 2015
The relative stability of two-dimensional soft quasicrystals is examined using a recently developed projection method which provides a unified numerical framework to compute the free energy of periodic crystal and quasicrystals. Accurate free energies of

Magnetic Correlations in a Periodic Anderson Model with Non-Uniform Conduction Electron Coordination

open access: yes, 2016
The Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) is widely studied to understand strong correlation physics and especially the competition of antiferromagnetism and singlet formation.

Formation of a quasicrystalline Pb monolayer on the ten-fold surface of the decagonal Al-Ni-Co quasicrystal

open access: yes, 2008
Lead has been deposited on the ten-fold surface of decagonal Al72Ni11Co17 to form an epitaxial quasicrystalline single-element monolayer. The overlayer grows through nucleation of nanometer-sized irregular islands and the coverage saturates at 1 ML.

A Guide to Mathematical Quasicrystals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This introductory survey deals with mathematical and physical properties of discrete structures such as point sets and tilings. The emphasis is on proper generalizations of concepts and ideas from classical crystallography. In particular, we focus on their interplay with various physically motivated equivalence concepts such as local ...

Quasicrystals and Almost Periodicity [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications in Mathematical Physics, 2005
We introduce a topology ${\cal T}$ on the space $U$ of uniformly discrete subsets of the Euclidean space. Assume that $S$ in $U$ admits a unique autocorrelation measure. The diffraction measure of $S$ is purely atomic if and only if $S$ is almost periodic in $(U,{\cal T})$. This result relates idealized quasicrystals to almost periodicity.

Structurally complex Frank-Kasper phases and quasicrystal approximants: electronic origin of stability

open access: yes, 2017
Metal crystals with tetrahedral packing are known as Frank-Kasper phases with large unit cells with the number of atoms from hundreds to thousands. The main factors of the formation and stability of these phases are the atomic size ratio and the number ...

Analytic Solutions to Two-Dimensional Decagonal Quasicrystals with Defects Using Complex Potential Theory

open access: yesCrystals, 2019
An analytical treatment for two-dimensional point group 10 mm decagonal quasicrystals with defects was suggested based on the complex potential method.

A Review of Transmission Electron Microscopy of Quasicrystals—How Are Atoms Arranged?

open access: yesCrystals, 2016
Quasicrystals (QCs) possess rotational symmetries forbidden in the conventional crystallography and lack translational symmetries. Their atoms are arranged in an ordered but non-periodic way.

Development of Al1070-Quasicrystal (Al65Cu23Fe12) composites using friction stir processing and its mechanical characterization

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2020
This study aims at analysing the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of quasicrystalline (Al _65 Cu _23 Fe _12 ) strengthened Al1070 composites by Friction Stir Processing (FSP).

Stability of the decagonal quasicrystal in the Lennard-Jones-Gauss system

open access: yes, 2008
Although quasicrystals have been studied for 25 years, there are many open questions concerning their stability: What is the role of phason fluctuations? Do quasicrystals transform into periodic crystals at low temperature? If yes, by what mechanisms? We
