The influence of queen age and quality during queen replacement in honeybee colonies
Animal Behaviour, 2000Honeybee, Apis mellifera, colonies replace their queens by constructing many queen cells and then eliminating supernumerary queens until only one remains. The ages of the queens and the variation in their reproductive potential are important factors in the outcome of such events.

The fitness of a social insect colony depends greatly on the quality (i.e., mating ability, fecundity, and offspring viability) of its queen(s). In honeybees, there is marked variation in the quality of young queens that compete in a series of lethal duels to replace a colony’s previous queen.

Insectes Sociaux, 1999
The requeening process was investigated under emergency conditions in honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera L.). The progression of queen cell construction was closely monitored after removal of the mother queen, and the newly-emerged queens were measured for several physical traits to quantify their reproductive potential (= quality). The results suggest

Local Honey Bee Queen Production and Quality
Bee World, 2016AbstractAs the number of small-scale local queen operations increase, questions regarding queen quality and how beekeepers can measure queen quality also arise. By shifting the focus from simply rearing queens to instead rearing “high quality” queens through the establishment of local breeding programs, local honey bee queen producers and honey bee ...

The influence of feed additives on the acceptance and quality of queen bees
Kormlenie sel'skohozjajstvennyh zhivotnyh i kormoproizvodstvo (Feeding of agricultural animals and feed production), 2021Currently, many scientists have proven the positive influence of feed additives on the productivity of different types of farm animals including bees since feed additives have a positive effect on the honey productivity of bee colonies and the quality of queen bees.

The quality of Gold Queen Hami melons stored under different temperatures
Scientia Horticulturae, 2019Abstract Low temperature storage prolongs the postharvest life of various fresh fruits and vegetables. However, the actual storage temperature may also significantly influence fruit and vegetable quality. In the present study, we stored Gold Queen Hami melons at three different temperatures [21 °C (control), 3 °C, and 0.5 °C (0 ± 0.5 °C)] for 36 days.

Honeybee queen quality control in Croatia
2012Honeybee queen quality control is estimated by monitoring of spermatheca morphological characteristics. Three queens were taken from 28 Croatian queen breeders. The quality control was carried out on Croatian native honeybee queens (Apis mellifera carnica). Diameter of spermatheca and number of spermatozoa were analyzed.

Honey bees are social insects that live in communities called colonies. Under normal conditions, there are tens of thousands of worker bees and a few hundred drones, the number of which varies according to the seasons, with a queen in this social structure.
