Histological Estimates of Ovariole Number in Honey Bee Queens,Apis mellifera, Reveal Lack of Correlation with other Queen Quality Measures [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Insect Science, 2011
Published estimates of the number of ovarioles found in the ovaries of honey bee, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) queens range from 100 to 180 per ovary. Within the context of a large-scale study designed to assay the overall quality of queens obtained from various commercial sources, a simple histology-based method for accurate determination ...

Movement of nest‐searching bumblebee queens reflects nesting habitat quality

open access: yesEcological Entomology, 2022
Abstract Movement of foraging animals can be used as an indirect index of habitat quality because movement patterns are expected to shift in association with resources resulting in increased time spent in high‐quality habitat.

Multidimensional Profiling of MRI‐Negative Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Uncovers Distinct Phenotypes

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Although hippocampal sclerosis (TLE‐HS) represents the most frequent cause of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), up to 30% of patients show no lesion on visual MRI inspection (TLE‐MRIneg). These cases pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and are underrepresented in surgical series.

Quality evaluation of surimi and fish nuggets from Queen fish (Scomberoides commersonnianus) [PDF]

open access: yesFood Science & Nutrition, 2019
AbstractThe purpose of this study was formulation and evaluation of physicochemical properties of fish and surimi nuggets prepared from Queen fish (Scomberiodes commersonnianus) during 90 days of storage. Chemical analysis showed that surimi nuggets contained less protein, fat, and ash due to washing steps during surimi preparation.

Advancing Age Modulates Associations Between Cognitive Impairment and Brain Volumes in Early MS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Cognitive impairment is common in multiple sclerosis (MS), but manifestations following the first demyelinating event are relatively unexplored. We investigated cross‐sectional associations between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)–derived brain volumes and the presence of cognitive impairment outcomes five years after the first ...

Sex‐Specific Differences in Survival and Heart Failure Hospitalization After Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy With or Without Defibrillation

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2019
Background Women are underrepresented in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) trials. Some studies suggest that women fare better than men after CRT.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE PEACEFUL EXCHANGE OF QUEEN BEES BY FAMILIES OF BEE AND THE QUALITY OF QUEEN BEES

open access: yes, 2022
In the conditions of Uzbekistan, cases of replacement of the queen bee with a peaceful bee in the bee family are more common in "gray" mountain bees, as well as in "Kuban" bees. It is rarely found in bees of the "Urta Rus" breed and local population of Uzbekistan.

Adopting a blended approach to learning: experiences from radiography at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The perspective of the radiography teaching team at Queen Margaret University (QMU) was that a transmission mode of programme delivery was sub-optimal in helping students to learn and make links between theory and practice.

White Matter Hyperintensity Burden and Short‐Interval Change Associated With Sleep Apnoea in the UK Biobank

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Purpose White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are a core neuroimaging marker of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). Sleep apnoea (SA) is a recognized vascular risk factor, but its associations with regional WMH burden, short‐interval WMH change and cognitive performance in population‐based cohorts remain incompletely defined. We

The Multiple Sclerosis Severity Allele rs10191329A and Cognitive Function: A UK Biobank Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The genome‐wide association study of Multiple Sclerosis severity linked the genetic variant rs10191329A to long‐term disability and implicated brain resilience as a determinant of outcome. We hypothesised that rs10191329A might influence cognition in other neurological diseases and healthy controls.
