Birth of a Language in the Backlands of Brazil

open access: yesCognitive Science, Volume 49, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract It is assumed that in order to acquire a language, children must be exposed to a language during the critical period, which generally lasts until puberty. Here, we report on Cena, an emergent sign language that has developed among a small group of deaf people in an isolated town in the state of Piauí, Brazil. Starting three generations ago, it

Ar‐Ar Dating of the Nephelinite‐to‐Basanite Transition at Etinde and Mount Cameroon (Cameroon Volcanic Line, West Africa) Provides Insights Into the Origin of Intraplate Magmatism

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 26, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract Intraplate magmatism is widespread in continental and oceanic domains. Some occurrences, such as Hawai'i, fit the predictions of the mantle‐plume hypothesis well. However, many occurrences require alternative explanations. The Cameroon volcanic line (CVL) in West Africa is one of the most voluminous and long‐lived non‐plume intraplate magmatic

Impacts of fire on canopy structure and its resilience depend on successional stage in Amazonian secondary forests

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 11, Issue 4, Page 394-410, August 2025.
We analyzed the effects of fire on secondary forests' vertical structure in different successional stages using lidar metrics. Our results show that independently of the successional stage, secondary forests that experienced fire were more degraded than unburned secondary forest areas. Overall, our results show that forests in early successional stage (

Fire Effects on Bird Communities From Seasonally Flooded Forests Along Amazonian Black Water Rivers of the Negro River Basin

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 5, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Fire significantly contributes to Amazonian degradation, with igapó forests (seasonally flooded by blackwater rivers) being especially vulnerable. Igapó forests support species adapted to seasonal flooding, making fire a critical threat to these specialised organisms.
