Quenching and Partitioning: Science and Technology

2013
A lecture given by John Speer, at the Adventures in the Physical Metallurgy of Steels (APMS) conference held in Cambridge University. The quench and partitioning process involves partial transformation to martensite, followed by an increase in temperature to permit the excess carbon to partition into the residual austenite.

Microstructure Characterization of Quenching and Partitioning Steels

Materials Science Forum, 2018
A steel containing Fe-0.2C-2Mn-Si-Al was annealed using intercritical Q&P cycles. Quenching temperature and partitioning time at 440°C was varied. Analysis of microstructure evolution during such Q&P treatments was performed using different characterization tools: FEG-SEM, EBSD, dilatometer and saturation magnetization measurements. Especially,

Quenching and Partitioning in Hot Stamped Steels

Heat Treating Conference, 2017
Abstract The present work is the first stage of an ongoing research project concerning with integration of quenching and partitioning heat treatment into the traditional hot stamping process, for 22MnB5 alloy, high Si and high Mn steels, last two proposed for the research with a special chemical composition to enhance Quenching and ...

Room-Temperature Quenching and Partitioning Steel

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2018
The current study proposes a room-temperature quenching and partitioning (RT-Q&P) process to design new steels with an ultrahigh tensile strength (1.3 ~ 1.5 GPa) and a large total elongation (19 ~ 3 pct). This steel has a dual-phase microstructure with metastable austenite grains embedded in the martensite matrix.

Optimized Properties of a Quenching and Partitioning Steel by Quenching at Fine Martensite Start Temperature

Metals and Materials International, 2020
Five quenching temperatures were designed to investigate the relationship between volume fraction of retained austenite and microstructure, mechanical properties of a medium carbon quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steel. It is normally accepted that the optimal mechanical property of Q&P steels is obtained by quenching at optimum temperature, which ...

Effect of Interfacial Mn Partitioning on Carbon Partitioning and Interface Migration During the Quenching and Partitioning Process

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2017
A so-called QP-LE model, in which interface condition is assumed to be Local Equilibrium (LE), has been proposed to evaluate the effect of interfacial Mn partitioning on interface migration and carbon partitioning during the Quenching and partitioning process (Q&P) of an Fe-0.3C-3.0Mn-1.5Si (wt pct) alloy.

Benefits of Intercritical Annealing in Quenching and Partitioning Steel

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2018
Compared to the quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steel produced by full austenization annealing, the Q&P steel produced by the intercritical annealing shows a similar ultimate tensile stress but a larger tensile ductility. This property is attributable to the higher volume fraction and the better mechanical stability of the retained austenite after the

Quenching and Partitioning Automotive Steels

Abstract Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steel is a term used to describe a series of C-Si-Mn, C-Si-Mn-Al, or other steels subjected to the recently developed Q&P heat treatment process. This article presents compositions, microstructure, processing, mechanical properties, formability, weldability, and special attributes of Q&

Microstructural Response of High Aluminum Steels to Quenching and Partitioning Treatment

Volume 2A: Advanced Manufacturing, 2013
Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) is a novel heat treatment process that is able to produce steels with a microstructure consisting of controlled amounts of finely divided retained austenite in a martensitic or ferritic-martensitic matrix. Following quenching to a temperature in the Ms-Mf range, the steel is subjected to partitioning treatment that ...
