ABSTRACT Irradiance strongly affects the morphology, carbon (C) uptake and construction costs of leaves and branches. Within tree crowns, light decreases from the top downwards, but whether this translates to differences in the C balance of sun and shade branches remains unclear. Here, we combined a light‐driven photosynthesis model, parameterised with

High climatic niche stability across life stages in Swiss forest tree species
Do Swiss trees change their niche as they grow? Studying 43 species across Switzerland, we found that most don't! Juveniles and adults share similar climatic niches, with ontogenetic shifts being small and still seemingly unrelated to climate change.

International audienceOaks are long-standing models for the study of gene flow and hybridisation. Temperate (Quercus petraea) and sub-Mediterranean (Quercus pyrenaica) oaks coexist in central Spain, showing remarkable differences in population size and ...

Beech decline reshapes fine root traits, microbial composition and soil carbon–nutrient cycling
This study highlights the critical role of rhizosphere interactions in nutrient cycling and tree health. It was found that tree decline triggers cascading effects that influence fine root, microbial communities and soil enzyme activities in the rhizosphere.

We quantified the complexity of leaf margin in a set of Quercus tree species using fractal dimension estimated by the box-counting method (FDb). Leaves were sampled from seedlings in a set of 15 Quercus species with a wide range of leaf morphology (Q ...

Growth and nutrition of Quercus petraea underplanted in artificial
This study presents results on the growth and nutritional status of Quercus petraea trees underplanted in an artificial pine stand as a conversion strategy. A total of 162 plots of 400 to 800 m2 were established in underplanted pine stands (130 plots), naturally regenerated oaks in pine stands (23 plots) and pure oak plantations (9 plots).

The reproductive success of a Quercus petraea x Q. robur F1-hybrid in back-crossing situations
A 56 year old Quercus petraea $\times $ Q. robur F1-hybrid was back-crossed to both parental species. Pollen mixes were applied and paternity assigned to offspring based on microsatellite markers. The studied Q. petraea $\times $ Q. robur hybrid proved
