Flood-Ring Formation and Root Development in Response to Experimental Flooding of Young Quercus robur Trees

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2016
Spring flooding in riparian forests can cause significant reductions in earlywood-vessel size in submerged stem parts of ring-porous tree species, leading to the presence of ‘flood rings’ that can be used as a proxy to reconstruct past flooding events ...

Quercus robur acorn peel as a novel coagulating adsorbent for cationic dye removal from aquatic ecosystems

open access: yes, 2017
Oak acorn peel (OP) was used in natural form for the removal of cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB), acridine orange (AO) and malachite green (MG) from aqueous solutions. OP removed 60–97% of 600 mg L−1 dyes at wide ranging pH (2–10).

Variation in wood density between mature sessile oak and English oak trees growing in different vegetation zones

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science
Wood density is a fundamental functional trait influencing ecological adaptation, hydraulic safety, and timber utilisation in temperate hardwoods. This study investigated variation in wood density (12% moisture) across mature stands of two economically ...
