A polling model with an autonomous server [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Polling models are used as an analytical performance tool in several application areas. In these models, the focus often is on controlling the operation of the server as to optimize some performance measure.

Commissioning an Inexpensive Off‐The‐Shelf Spectrograph for Radial‐Velocity Studies

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present a way to set up an inexpensive out of the shelf spectrograph at a local observatory. Stability and resolution of the spectrograph are high enough for radial velocity determination of binary stars or determination of stellar characteristics. Even some exoplanets might be detectable via the radial velocity method.

Bus queue time estimation model for a curbside bus stop considering the blocking effect

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Bus queue time estimation of a curbside bus stop is essential to evaluate the operation, reliability and performance of a bus system. Arriving buses and served buses on upstream berths form an overflow queue considering the no overtaking principle and ...

Parental choice of private tuition: Valuing attention, judging quality and navigating access in England's underregulated supplementary education market

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Private supplementary education is burgeoning worldwide, and over 25% of English children have received private tutoring. The neoliberalisation of education and parents' responsibilisation for children's attainment have driven market growth, but not all can afford to participate.

Scaling of avalanche queues in directed dissipative sandpiles

open access: yes, 2000
We simulate queues of activity in a directed sandpile automaton in 1+1 dimensions by adding grains at the top row with driving rate $0 < r \leq 1$. The duration of elementary avalanches is exactly described by the distribution $P_1(t) \sim t^{-3/2}\exp{(-

The Strategic Role of Waste Inventories in Industrial Symbiosis: A Simulation‐Based Perspective on Performance and Resilience of Industrial Symbiosis Networks

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ensuring the resilience of industrial symbiosis networks (ISNs) has emerged as a key concern in the literature. However, existing studies focus on network‐level strategies, neglecting the potential benefits derived from strengthening the links between symbiotic partners.

Customer Behavior Analysis in Ticket Windows at Scenic Spots from Game-Theoretic Perspective

open access: yesDiscrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, 2021
In service industries, especially in some ticket windows at scenic spots, affected by congestion, some customers often find excuses or ask the acquaintances in the queue so as to jump the queue and complete their corresponding service as early as ...

Backpressure-based control protocols: design and computational aspects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Congestion control in packet-based networks is often realized by feedback protocols. In this paper we assess their performance under a back-pressure mechanism that has been proposed and standardized for Ethernet metropolitan networks. In such a mechanism

MODELING AND SIMULATION OF QUEUE WAITING THROUGH THE CONCEPT OF PETRI NETS [PDF]

open access: yesChallenges of the Knowledge Society, 2011
Petri Nets-PN are a graphical formalism which is gaining popularity in recent years as a tool in Matlab for the representation of complex logical interactions among physical components or activities in a system.
