In this paper we consider a queue in which a person, having joined, may decide to leave and give up service if it appears that the time consumed will exceed some maximum which he has available. Specifically, three problems are treated: a) How to make a rational (sequential) decision while waiting in the queue, b) the probable effect of this decision ...

Abstract This paper explores teachers', parents' and pupils' perceptions and described experiences of school toilet policies, provisions and practices within state‐funded primary (5–11 years) and secondary (11–16 years) schools in England. In doing so, this research critically examines how school‐specific policies and toilet provisions influence ...

Robust multitask feature learning with adaptive Huber regressions
Abstract When data from multiple tasks have outlier contamination, existing multitask learning methods perform less efficiently. To address this issue, we propose a robust multitask feature learning method by combining the adaptive Huber regression tasks with mixed regularization. The robustification parameters can be chosen to adapt to the sample size,

Scaling of avalanche queues in directed dissipative sandpiles
We simulate queues of activity in a directed sandpile automaton in 1+1 dimensions by adding grains at the top row with driving rate $0 < r \leq 1$. The duration of elementary avalanches is exactly described by the distribution $P_1(t) \sim t^{-3/2}\exp{(-
