Preemptive Entry and Technology Diffusion: The Market for Drive‐In Theaters

open access: yesThe RAND Journal of Economics, Volume 57, Issue 3, Page 471-494, Autumn (Fall) 2026.
ABSTRACT This article studies entry preemption in new industries. We first test a key prediction of dynamic entry games: Entry preemption is most relevant in intermediate‐sized markets, where firms face highest uncertainty about future entry. Using US drive‐in theater market (1945–1957) data, we find robust evidence for this non‐monotonic relationship ...

Making a Living: The Digitization of Rebusques Among Colombians

open access: yesThe Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Volume 31, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT This article examines making a living through the digitization of rebusque, a Colombian term for practices within the informal economy. Drawing on multi‐sited digital ethnography conducted between 2020 and 2025 with Colombian immigrants in Chile and in Colombia, I show how rebusques became central to economic survival during the COVID‐19 ...

Sprites Observed by ASIM: First Imaging Data Set and Temporal UV Emission Patterns

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 14, 28 July 2026.
Abstract We present the first data set analysis of 41 imaging‐confirmed sprite events detected by the ASIM‐MMIA instrument. They were visible in the 337 nm camera images from an initial list of 102 candidates identified by the ultraviolet (UV 180–230 nm) photometer.

Estimation of convective precipitation: the meteorological radar versus an automatic rain gauge network [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Geosciences, 2005
The estimation of convective precipitation and its contribution to total precipitation is an important issue both in hydrometeorology and radio links. The greatest part of this kind of precipitation is related with high intensity values that can produce ...

Multimode Phonon Lasing via Self‐Induced Optical Coherent Pumping

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, Volume 20, Issue 13, 8 July 2026.
A silicon optomechanical nanobeam generates self‐sustained phonon lasing in multiple competing mechanical modes via self‐pulsing, an intrinsic optical modulation arising from cavity nonlinearity. This self‐organized mechanism enables robust multi‐frequency operation spanning periodic, quasi‐periodic, and chaotic regimes without external modulation. The
