Biogeography of curimatid fishes reveals multiple lowland-upland river transitions and differential diversification in the Neotropics (Teleostei, Curimatidae). [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2021
The time‐calibrated molecular phylogeny and geographic range evolution of the Neotropical family Curimatidae show a Late Cretaceous origin in lowland basins of South America with subsequent colonization to upland basins at multiple times during the Cenozoic.

Insecticide Resistance and Its Intensity in Populations of Malaria Vectors in Colombia. [PDF]

open access: yesBiomed Res Int, 2018
Insecticide resistance in malaria vectors threatens malaria prevention and control efforts. In Colombia the three primary vectors, Anopheles darlingi, An. nuneztovari s.l., and An. albimanus, have reported insecticide resistance to pyrethroids, organophosphates, carbamates, and DDT; however, the insecticide resistance monitoring is not continuous, and ...

Habitat-dependent occupancy and movement in a migrant songbird highlights the importance of mangroves and forested lagoons in Panama and Colombia. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2019
We found that overwintering occupancy and movement are habitat‐dependent in a nonterritorial overwintering migrant bird. Warblers in mangroves and other wet habitats are least likely to experience local extinction as dry season progresses, and warbler abundance was highest in mature mangroves forests.

Phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of the ancient genus Onychorhynchus (Aves: Onychorhynchidae) suggest cryptic Amazonian diversity

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2023, Issue 11-12, November/December 2023., 2023
We examined phylogeographic patterns and cryptic diversity within the royal flycatcher, Onychorhynchus coronatus (Aves: Onychorhynchidae), a widespread Neotropical lowland forest tyrant flycatcher. A phylogeny of the six recognized subspecies was constructed from mtDNA sequence data of the NADH dehydrogenase subunit two gene, using Bayesian Inference ...

Harm to the global commons on trial: The role of the prevention principle in international climate adjudication

open access: yesReview of European, Comparative &International Environmental Law, Volume 32, Issue 2, Page 226-236, July 2023., 2023
Abstract Although the climate crisis is the result of a failure to prevent environmental harm, the principle of prevention has thus far remained discrete in domestic climate litigation. Similarly, in the context of international climate adjudication, reliance on the prevention principle could seem limited by two main obstacles: its anchor in ...

Phylogeographic Diversity of the Lower Central American Cichlid Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus (Cichlidae). [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Evol Biol, 2012
It is well appreciated that historical and ecological processes are important determinates of freshwater biogeographic assemblages. Phylogeography can potentially lend important insights into the relative contribution of historical processes in biogeography. However, the extent that phylogeography reflects historical patterns of drainage connection may

Of kin and system: Rights of nature and the UN search for Earth jurisprudence

open access: yesTransactions of the Institute of British Geographers, Volume 47, Issue 3, Page 820-834, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Since 2009, the United Nations programme on Harmony with Nature has sought a new philosophy of global environmental governance known as Earth jurisprudence. This paper examines how Harmony with Nature has advanced Earth jurisprudence to unite Indigenous legal traditions, rights of nature, and mounting evidence from Earth system science ...

Research Applications for the Geostationary Lightning Mapper Operational Lightning Flash Data Product. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Geophys Res Atmos, 2019
Abstract The Lightning Cluster Filter Algorithm in the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) ground system identifies lightning flashes from the stream of event detections. It excels at clustering simple flashes but experiences anomalies with complex flashes that last longer than 3 s or contain more than 100 groups, leading to flashes being artificially

Ethnomedicinal Studies, Chemical Composition, and Antibacterial Activity of the Mammea americana L. Bark in the Municipality of Cértegui, Chocó, Colombia

open access: yesAdvances in Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Mammea americana L. is a plant with diverse medicinal uses in the municipality of Cértegui, Chocó, Colombia. This research characterized the ethnomedicinal, chemical, and antibacterial activities of the bark of Mammea americana. Through interviews and semistructured surveys with the community, its ethnomedicinal uses were determined.

Conservation threats and future prospects for the freshwater fishes of Ecuador: A hotspot of Neotropical fish diversity

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 99, Issue 4, Page 1158-1189, October 2021., 2021
ABSTRACT Freshwater fish communities in Ecuador exhibit some of the highest levels of diversity and endemism in the Neotropics. Unfortunately, aquatic ecosystems in the country are under serious threat and conditions are deteriorating. In 2018–19, the government of Ecuador sponsored a series of workshops to examine the conservation status of Ecuador's ...
