Evaluation of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) Program

open access: yesJournal of Cancer Education
AbstractThe National Cancer Institute (NCI) K99/R00 award is intended to help postdoctoral scholars transition in a timely manner to research independence and to foster their development of an impactful cancer research program that is competitive for subsequent independent funding. Here we analyzed factors that impact peer review outcomes and evaluated

Sex differences in neuromodulatory subcortical systems and their implications for Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Neuromodulatory subcortical systems (NSSs) are uniquely susceptible to dementia‐related pathology, leading to frequent molecular and behavioral impairments associated with altered function of these nuclei. Some of these systems display clear sex‐specific cytoarchitecture and signaling leading to distinct physiology and behavioral outputs in ...

Developing Best Practices for Inclusion in fNIRS Research: Equity for Participants With Afro‐Textured Hair

open access: yesDevelopmental Psychobiology, Volume 68, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a popular optical neuroimaging method; however, participants with Afro‐textured (i.e., dark, coarse, curly) hair are often excluded due to difficulty obtaining sensor–scalp contact. Grounded in lived experience and sociocultural literature, we aimed to develop and evaluate culturally responsive ...

Single‐Particle Characterization Reveals Heterogeneous Extracellular Vesicle Fusion with Liposomes

open access: yesSmall Methods, Volume 10, Issue 5, 9 March 2026.
This study used five orthogonal single‐particle techniques to compare how common mechanical methods fuse extracellular vesicles with liposomes. By quantifying fused‐particle yield, purity, and vesicle integrity, we found that freeze‐thaw and sonication generated the highest fusion but that all methods introduced membrane perturbation or damage.

Decision trees, monotone functions, and semimatroids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We define decision trees for monotone functions on a simplicial complex. We define homology decidability of monotone functions, and show that various monotone functions related to semimatroids are homology decidable.

Higher circulating intermediate monocytes are associated with cognitive function in women with HIV

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2021
BACKGROUND Identifying a quantitative biomarker of neuropsychiatric dysfunction in people with HIV (PWH) remains a significant challenge in the neuroHIV field. The strongest evidence to date implicates the role of monocytes in central nervous system (CNS)
