Formation and stability of a two-dimensional nickel silicide on Ni (111) an Auger, LEED, STM, and high-resolution photoemission Study

open access: yes, 2012
Using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and high resolution photo-electron spectroscopy (HR-PES) techniques we have studied the annealing effect of one silicon monolayer ...

Enzymatic degradation of PrPSc by a protease secreted from Aeropyrum pernix K1. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
BACKGROUND: An R30 fraction from the growth medium of Aeropyrum pernix was analyzed for the protease that can digest the pathological prion protein isoform (PrP(Sc)) from different species (human, bovine, deer and mouse).

Uncertainty principle for experimental measurements: Fast versus slow probes

open access: yes, 2015
The result of a physical measurement depends on the timescale of the experimental probe. In solid-state systems, this simple quantum mechanical principle has far-reaching consequences: the interplay of several degrees of freedom close to charge, spin or ...

The structure ofAl(111)-K−(√3 × √3)R30° determined by LEED: stable and metastable adsorption sites [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
It is found that the adsorption of potassium on Al(111) at 90 K and at 300 K both result in a (√3 × √3)R0° structure. Through a detailed LEED analysis it is revealed that at 300 K the adatoms occupy substitutional sites and at 90 K the adatoms occupy on ...

Selective Charge Injection via Topological van der Waals Contacts for Barrier‐Free p‐Type TMD Transistors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Topological van der Waals contacts represent a new class of electrodes for 2D semiconductors, enabling precise control of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) and contact resistance (RC) through interlayer distance and orbital hybridization engineering. In Se‐based transition metal dichalcogenides, these contacts achieve an ultralow SBH of 7 meV, RC of 0.

The effect of injection speed on remifentanil-induced cough in children [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Anesthesiology, 2014
BackgroundRemifentanil sometimes elicits cough during induction of anesthesia, as with the use of other fentanyl congeners. We designed this study to investigate the incidence of remifentanil-induced cough (RIC) in children and to evaluate the effect of ...

Investigation of unconventional reconstruction and electronic properties on the Na2IrO3 surface

open access: yes, 2014
Na2IrO3 is an intriguing material for which spin-orbit coupling plays a key role. Theoretical predictions, so far unverified, have been made that the surface of Na2IrO3 should exhibit a clear signature of the quantum spin Hall effect.

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.
