AbstractJapanese raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) have been isolated from populations (e.g., N. p. ussuriensis) on mainland Asia for about 12,000 years. Since the environment and climate of Japan differ greatly from that on mainland Asia, different selection pressures have affected the two populations.

Reproduction in the Raccoon Dog in Finland
Journal of Mammalogy, 1995Reproduction in the raccoon dog ( Nyctereutes procyonoides ) was studied on the basis of 632 female carcasses in Finland in 1986–1990. In Finland, raccoon dogs usually mate from February to April, with a peak in March. Differences occurred both regionally and with respect to age, with older females breeding earlier than younger ones.

Journal of Parasitology, 2007Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a nematode that naturally parasitizes in the pulmonary arteries and the right ventricle of domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) as final hosts. Japanese raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) also are known to be susceptible to infection by the parasite.
