Rachis morphology cannot accurately predict the mechanical performance of primary feathers in extant (and therefore fossil) feathered flyers [PDF]
It was previously suggested that the flight ability of feathered fossils could be hypothesized from the diameter of their feather rachises. Central to the idea is the unvalidated assumption that the strength of a primary flight feather (i.e. its material

Past, present and future of local crop evolution
Promoting agrobiodiversity is a promising strategy for mitigating the negative effects of climate change on global food security. We highlight the central role evolutionary processes play in harnessing the potential of local crops by integrating genomics, archaeology, ethnobotany and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).

Small Object Detection Method for Bioimages Based on Improved YOLOv8n Model
This study proposes a small object detection method for bioimages based on an improved YOLOv8n model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively enhances detection precision, recall, and mAP50, offering a novel solution for the technical challenges in biological microscopy research.

This study reports two isolated feather fossils from the Lower Cretaceous Dabeigou Formation in northeastern China. Morphological analyses identified them as the earliest known feathered theropods (potentially including avian) in the Jehol Biota. This finding reveals a complex ecosystem at the dawn of the Jehol Biota, bridging the temporal and faunal ...

ABSTRACT While oasis settlements emerged during the Bronze Age in Eastern and Northern Arabia, the settlement process in Central Arabia was different. Excavations at al‐Yamāma—main ancient settlement of the al‐Kharj oasis (Riyadh Province, KSA)—suggest that the latter did not emerge before the second half of the first millennium BCE.
