A rack-and-pinion device at the molecular scale
Nature Materials, 2006Molecular machines, and in particular molecular motors with synthetic molecular structures and fuelled by external light, voltage or chemical conversions, have recently been reported. Most of these experiments are carried out in solution with a large ensemble of molecules and without access to one molecule at a time, a key point for future use of ...

Effect of Pinion Profile Modification on Rack and Pinion Steering Gear
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2005<div class="htmlview paragraph">Low rack gain and high reduction gear ratio in the case of Rack and Pinion Steering (RPS) gear of an automobile puts a limit on pinion diameter. The tooth strength for small diameter pinion is achieved by reducing the number of teeth. Undercutting is avoided by resorting to a pinion profile shift. The profile shift

A Rack-and-Pinion Pumping Unit Design
Advanced Materials Research, 2012This paper presents a rack-and-pinion pumping unit. A type of SRD (switched reluctance driver) motor is utilized as the driving unit of the pumping unit. The rotation direction of the output shaft of the motor can change automatically, without reversing mechanism,so it can directly dive the gear box and then drive the rack-and-pinion in which the rack ...

Electronics and Power, 1970
The field over an open-sided linear motor contains a rotating component which can be used to spin rotors In a manner that is analogous to a rack-and-pinion action. If the rotor is made up of a stack of washers—a divided-cylinder rotor—some Interesting effects can be obtained.

Improvements in Rack and Pinion Steering Gears
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1983<div class="htmlview paragraph">The most effective way to improve the driver's road feel at high speeds is to increase the stiffness between the steering wheel and the vehicle's wheels at times when only a small amount of steering effort is required.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Though rack and pinion steering systems have ...

Properties of electrically preloaded rack-and-pinion drives
Production Engineering, 2015Ball screw drives are very common in industrial applications and, therefore, thorough analyses of their characteristics exist. Rack-and-pinion drives are a good alternative, if large travel ranges and high dynamics are required. However, they are not scientifically and systematically analysed.

Adaptive preloading for rack-and-pinion drive systems
CIRP Annals, 2018Abstract In the field of machine tools, rack-and-pinion drive systems are one of the commonly used feed drive systems. In order to achieve the high accuracy specifications of modern production facilities, these drives are electrically preloaded to reduce backlash in the drive train.

Plasmonic rack-and-pinion gear with chiral metasurface
SPIE Proceedings, 2016The effect of circularly polarized beaming excited by traveling surface plasmons, via chiral metasurface is experimentally studied. Here we show that the propagation direction of the plasmonic wave, evanescently excited on the thin gold film affects the handedness of the scattered beam polarization.

Effect of thermal noise on noncontact rack and pinion device
Physical Review E, 2012We study a nanoscale system composed of one corrugated plate (rack) and one corrugated cylinder (pinion) coupled via the lateral Casimir force. We assume that the rack moves uniformly. The axle of the pinion experiences frictional torque and random torque due to a surrounding fluid.
