Synchronizing noncontact rack-and-pinion devices

open access: yesApplied Physics Letters, 2012
The lateral Casimir force is employed to propose a nanoscale mechanical device composed of one rack and N pinions. A coupling between the pinions via torsional springs is shown to coordinate their motion through a synchronization transition. The system can work against loads that are greater than the lateral Casimir force for each device. The existence

Design of Multi‐Cell FDM Build Bed Systems for Optimal Material Usage in Additive Manufacturing Process

open access: yesMaterial Design &Processing Communication, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Support structures are essential in additive manufacturing (AM) processes such as material extrusion, particularly for fabricating parts with overhanging features. However, conventional supports are typically removed after printing and cannot be reused, resulting in significant material waste and increased printing time.

Study on the Mechanical Properties of a High‐Force Inerter Damper: Experimental Investigation

open access: yesStructural Control and Health Monitoring, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Inerter damper is a two‐end‐point acceleration‐type damper with significant mass amplification and negative stiffness characteristics, which has been widely studied in recent years. However, the inertance and inertia force of the current inerter dampers are relatively small, and their relevant energy dissipation mechanisms are still unclear, which ...

Inerter Chain−Embedded Finite Locally Resonant Meta‐Foundations for Enhanced Seismic Protection of Liquid Storage Tanks

open access: yesStructural Control and Health Monitoring, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Liquid storage tanks exhibit complex dynamic behaviors under seismic excitation due to fluid−structure interaction, where resonance effects amplify sloshing, elevate hydrodynamic pressures, and increase the risk of structural damage. While traditional bearing−based isolation reduces seismic responses by introducing a flexible isolation layer, it ...

Symmetry Breaking Metamaterial Sleeve Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 11, November 2025.
Metamaterial sleeves are designed to impart to a soft inflatable structure, nonlinear characteristics within the pressure–volume domain. By tuning the unit cells of the metamaterial sleeve, symmetry breaking is achieved during the inflation–deflation cycle.

RATIONALE OF THE EVALUATION AND SELECTION OF KINEMATIC AND TRIBOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SYSTEM «PINION – GEAR RACK» OF COLD-PILGERING MILLS

open access: yesNauka ta progres transportu, 2014
Purpose. During operation of cold-pilgering mills rotation of the shafts is carried out by means of pinion gears being in meshing with stationary gear racks, which is accompanied by various tribological defects, that can be avoided during the detailed ...

Rack-and-pinion effects in molecular rolling friction [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Magazine Letters, 2008
Rolling lubrication with spherical molecules working as 'nanobearings' has failed experimentally so far, without a full understanding of the physics involved and of the reasons why. Past model simulations and common sense have shown that molecules can only roll when they are not too closely packed to jam. The same type of model simulations now shows in
