Radar backscatter analysis for urban environments
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 1997Abstract A full understanding of radar backscatter from urban areas is necessary in order to develop a robust methodology for monitoring and classifying urban characteristics using remotely sensed Synthetic Aperture Radar images. This paper examines the dominant backscattering mechanisms such as single bounce from roofs, double bounce from wall-ground ...

Radar Backscatter Mapping Using TerraSAR-X
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2011Global backscatter data can be used for accurate synthetic aperture radar (SAR) performance estimation and optimizing instrument settings for SAR systems, e.g. the TerraSAR-X mission (TSM) and the TanDEM-X mission (TDM). The goal of this work is the generation of X-band backscatter maps by mosaicking images acquired by the TSM. An algorithm that allows

Radar backscatter characteristics of trees at 215 GHz
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 1988Millimeter-wave backscatter measurements are presented for various tree types taken during the 1987 growing season at Amherst, Massachusetts. These measurements were taken with a 215-GHz radar system that is capable of measuring backscatter for the VV (vertical transmit, vertical received), HH (horizontal transmit, horizontal received), VH, and HV ...

Site Specific Radar Clutter Backscattering Simulation
Frequenz, 2008Knowledge of radar clutter is essential to determine the radar range or the detectability of manmade objects embedded in a natural environment. In this article the computer model DORTE is presented. This simulation program estimates radar clutter backscattering for specific sites represented by digital elevation models.

Modeling of extremely heterogeneous radar backscatter
IGARSS'97. 1997 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings. Remote Sensing - A Scientific Vision for Sustainable Development, 2002A new class of G-distributions has been proposed to characterize the statistical properties of multi-look processed SAR data over the wide range of homogeneous, heterogeneous and extremely heterogeneous backscattering of terrain classes. The probability density function was derived as a product of a gamma distributed complex speckle variable and the ...

Radar Backscatter Signatures of Baltic Sea Ice
[Proceedings] IGARSS'91 Remote Sensing: Global Monitoring for Earth Management, 2005Radar backscatter signatures for winter conditions of Baltic sea ice are presented. Absolutely calibrated measurements are given at C-band for incidence angles between 30"-70', and at h'%band for normal incidence. The radar backscatter mechanisms ale discussed, and backscatter models are used to estimate properties of the sea ice.

Radar backscattering from Gerstner's sea surface wave
Waves in Random Media, 2002Abstract In the framework of a two-scale scattering model, radar backscattering from the rough sea surface was considered. The sea surface was modelled as a superposition of a nonlinear, large-scale Gerstner's wave and small-scale resonant Bragg scattering ripples.

Experiments on the Radar Backscatter of Snow
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience Electronics, 1977The 1-8-GHz microwave active spectrometer (MAS) system was used to measure the backscatter response from ground covered with a relatively thin layer of snow (up to 15 cm) in the 1975 winter. Except for one dry snow data set, the results of this experiment pertain to wet snow conditions.

Radar Backscatter from Conducting Polyhedral Spheres
IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, 2010Electromagnetic backscatter characteristics of conducting polyhedral spheres, constructed of 12 pentagons and a large number of hexagons, were investigated. The polyhedral structures were classified by their number of vertices and by the width of the conducting edges in their frames.
