A radar backscatter model for forest stands
Waves in Random Media, 1992Abstract A Monte Carlo method for calculating the radar backscatter cross-sections from a forest stand is presented in this study. The model for the forest stand consists of two layers: the top layer contains a mixture of randomly orientated dielectric circular disks or small needles representing the leaves of the deciduous trees or coniferous trees ...

A new radar auroral backscatter experiment
Nature, 1983In 1982 a new radar auroral backscatter system, SABRE (Sweden and Britain Radar Experiment), commenced operation in northern Europe. Observations with this ground-based system allow estimates to be made of the electric fields in the auroral E-region. As an electric field probe, the coherent radar technique is unique in that measurements are made over a

Radar backscatter characteristics of a desert surface
Remote Sensing of Environment, 1996Satellite radar altimeter measurements have shown spatial and temporal variations in the backscattered signal from desert surfaces. In order to understand these variations we have carried out extensive in situ measurements for the validation of a compilation of existing backscatter models.

Acoustic and radar sea surface backscatter
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1982Theoretical predictions of sea surface reverberation are compared with representative acoustic and radar data to determine those mechanisms responsible for backscatter. Predictions of the composite roughness scattering model are compared with data in three frequency ranges, 2–5 kHz acoustic (428‐and 1228‐MHz radar), 20–25 kHz acoustic (4455‐MHz radar),

Simulation of radar backscattering in a ripple tank
Proceedings of the IEEE, 1965A ripple tank study of wave motion associated with the wave formation in the vicinity of a cone-sphere is discussed. The experimental test facility is described. Included in the interpretation of the ripple tank experiments are the wave formations in the shadow region of the cone-sphere showing traveling and creeping waves.

Modeling of extremely heterogeneous radar backscatter
IGARSS'97. 1997 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings. Remote Sensing - A Scientific Vision for Sustainable Development, 2002A new class of G-distributions has been proposed to characterize the statistical properties of multi-look processed SAR data over the wide range of homogeneous, heterogeneous and extremely heterogeneous backscattering of terrain classes. The probability density function was derived as a product of a gamma distributed complex speckle variable and the ...

Dependence of Radar Backscatter on Environmental Parameters
1990Radar backscatter has been measured from instruments on SKYLAB and SEASAT with the goal of determining the winds from the backscatter data. New scatterometers such as NSCAT, proposed for ADEOS, have the same goal. Radar backscatter comes from the wavy ocean surface.

Radar backscatter from the surface of the Moon
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1965The experimentally measured dependence of the mean radar power backscattered from the lunar surface on the angle of incidence (delay time) is compared with the theoretical formula based on a lunar surface consisting of a superposition of several normal random processes of different structures.
