Anthromes and forest carbon responses to global change

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Forest ecosystems absorb and store about 25% of global carbon dioxide emissions annually and are increasingly shaped by human land use and management. Climate change interacts with land use and forest dynamics to influence observed carbon stocks and the strength of the land carbon sink.

Review on Laser Initiation of Energetic Materials

open access: yesPropellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics, EarlyView.
Laser ignitability of gold nanoparticles (GNPs)‐doped RDX explosive crystals. ABSTRACT Laser initiation of energetic materials has been an interesting and promising research area due to its safety and reliability features and its great potential for initiation device miniaturisation.

A case study of boundary‐layer development downstream of a small, remote island

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
An empirical investigation into fog–island interactions near a remote North Atlantic island during July 2022 is carried out using land‐ and ship‐based observing systems. During the case study, surface winds steadily decreased (a) while strong diurnal forcing caused strong spatial gradients in surface temperatures across the observing region (b ...

On methods for assessment of the value of observations in convection‐permitting data assimilation and numerical weather forecasting

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The routine assimilation of large numbers of observations collected from various observing systems is essential for the skill of modern numerical weather prediction (NWP). Assessment of the impact and influence of different observation types provides evidence guiding the design of future observation networks and the evaluation and improvement of ...

On the relay propagation of deep convection leading to a heavy rainfall event in a weak‐wind urban environment

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
By examining the downstream propagation of convective storms developed along a city belt leading to a heavy rainfall event at a remote distance in East China, this study shows the importance of urban effects interacting with lake/sea breezes in triggering deep convection.

The synergy of assimilating visible and infrared radiances and radar observations

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Evaluation of the analysis error for different cloud conditions revealed that combined assimilation can mitigate the ambiguity of individual visible and infrared channels. The combined assimilation of visible and infrared radiances can avoid the shortcomings of assimilating only visible or infrared radiances in convective‐scale numerical weather ...
