Taxonomic resolution in dual‐polarization weather radar observations of biological scatterers: A systematic review

open access: yesEcosphere
The derivation of biological information—abundance, diversity, movement of organisms—from dual‐polarization weather surveillance radars (WSRs) presents an opportunity for novel large‐scale biodiversity monitoring.

Implications of surveyor accuracy in bird flight height estimation for wind farm collision risk assessment

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April–June 2026.
Maps annotated with the height and distance of surrounding landscape features were provided to surveyors estimating bird flight height during ornithological vantage point surveys. Our results suggest that annotated maps can significantly reduce variability in the surveyors' estimates, improving accuracy and collision risk predictions.

ORNITHOLOGICAL RADAR OBSERVATIONS: BRIEF REVIEW OF STATIONARY AND MOBILE DEVICES

open access: yesActa Biologica Sibirica, 2015

Carbon finance initiatives can provide biodiversity benefits

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 4, April 2026.
We evaluated the biodiversity co‐benefits of a REDD+ initiative in the tropical forests of Sierra Leone and Liberia using a quasi‐experimental study design. Complementary measures from bioacoustics and DNA metabarcoding revealed that REDD+‐financed protected areas were associated with additional biodiversity benefits compared to control areas.

USING RADAR TO REVEAL LARGE-SCALE IN-FLIGHT BEHAVIORS OF MIGRATORY BIRDS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The shortest possible migratory route for birds is not always the best route to travel. Substantial research effort has established that birds in captivity are capable of orienting toward the direction of an intended goal, but efforts to examine how free-

Avian Wing Proportions and Flight Styles: First Step towards Predicting the Flight Modes of Mesozoic Birds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We investigated the relationship between wing element proportions and flight mode in a dataset of living avian species to provide a framework for making basic estimates of the range of flight styles evolved by Mesozoic birds.

A Multi‐Taxa Approach to Estuarine Biomonitoring: Assessing Vertebrate Biodiversity and Ecological Continuity Using Environmental DNA Metabarcoding in the Rance River (Brittany, France)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
We applied eDNA metabarcoding to assess vertebrate diversity in the Rance Estuary, France, across five stations spanning marine to freshwater environments, including areas upstream and downstream of a tidal power plant dam. A total of 124 vertebrate MOTUs were detected, with community composition reflecting the estuarine gradient and species turnover ...

MistNet: Measuring historical bird migration in the US using archived weather radar data and convolutional neural networks

open access: yes, 2019
Large networks of weather radars are comprehensive instruments for studying bird migration. For example, the US WSR-88D network covers the entire continental US and has archived data since the 1990s.

Climbing the urban canopy: Camera trap insights into mammal activity and habitat use

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 50, Issue 1, March 2026.
Abstract Urbanization profoundly impacts wildlife behavior and habitat use. While the effects of urbanization on diel activity patterns and mammal interactions have been well studied at the ground level, little is known about spatiotemporal patterns above the ground.

Ornis svecica moulting into its new plumage [Ornis svecica i ny fjäderdräkt]

open access: yes, 2020
At the start of the new decade, Ornis Svecia is now entering its 30th year as an ornithological journal. It is a year of change for the journal, perhaps most evident in the transition that started last year with Ornis Svecicamoving from a printed journal
