DInSAR products and applications for the RADARSAT Constellation Mission
The Canadian RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2018, to support primarily maritime surveillance (sea ice, surface wind, oil pollution and ship monitoring), disaster management (mitigation, warning, response and recovery), and ecosystem monitoring (agriculture, wetlands, forestry and coastal change).

Monitoring Flood Inundation Dynamics From Space
Abstract With the increasing intensity and frequency of flood events worldwide, the need for accurate and timely inundation mapping has never been more critical. Large‐scale flood extent estimations are vital for coordinating effective disaster response, facilitating recovery, and building future resilience.

Monitoring Pacific walrus coastal haulouts by satellite to estimate herd abundance and distribution
We monitored Pacific walrus haulouts with drone and satellite imagery to derive new methods for estimating minimum population size. The largest herd observed during an 8‐year study period was on the coast of northeastern Russia at Cape Serdtse‐Kamen in autumn 2022 where the aggregation spanned over an area of 184,094 m2 with a mean density (and 90 ...

Abstract High‐resolution observations of ocean surface wind (OSW) are crucial for analyzing and forecasting tropical cyclones; however, current data are insufficient. While data sets such as the Cross‐Calibrated Multiplatform (CCMP) and ERA5 provide gap‐free wind fields, their 25 km resolution and tendency to underestimate cyclone wind speeds limit ...

Abstract The 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes caused extensive deformation along the East Anatolian Fault Zone, producing significant north‐south displacements. Standard Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) methods face significant challenges in resolving near‐field deformation due to phase decorrelation caused by high displacement

Asymmetry of Cyclonic Sea Surface Wind and Wave Observed by SAR
Abstract CyclObs‐derived wind and SWH field are extracted from over 600 dual‐polarized Sentinel‐1 (S‐1) images of around 300 tropical cyclones (TCs) over the past eight years to investigate asymmetry of wind and wave fields during TCs. Fetch analysis and machine learning technique, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), is used to establish a ...

Abstract Large freshwater lakes are critical for human life, ecosystem functioning, and the global carbon cycle. However, consistent high‐resolution methods to characterize ice over large lakes remain limited. Here we develop an algorithm to progress ice observations over inland bodies of water by improving surface classifications using data derived ...

Towards a coherent flood forecasting framework for Canada: Local to global implications
Abstract Operational flood forecasting in Canada is a provincial responsibility that is carried out by several entities across the country. However, the increasing costs and impacts of floods require better and nationally coordinated flood prediction systems.

Abstract In response to the 2017 Decadal Survey, NASA conducted a five‐year study on the Surface Deformation and Change (SDC) designated observable to study potential mission concepts. As part of the SDC mission study, the Commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (ComSAR) subgroup was tasked with evaluating the current landscape of the SAR and ...
