Deep Learning‐Based MultiSource Satellite Data Fusion and Downscaling for Tropical Cyclone Wind Fields

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 2, Issue 4, December 2025.
Abstract High‐resolution observations of ocean surface wind (OSW) are crucial for analyzing and forecasting tropical cyclones; however, current data are insufficient. While data sets such as the Cross‐Calibrated Multiplatform (CCMP) and ERA5 provide gap‐free wind fields, their 25 km resolution and tendency to underestimate cyclone wind speeds limit ...

Active SAR Antennas: Design, Development, and Current Programs

open access: yesInternational Journal of Antennas and Propagation, Volume 2009, Issue 1, 2009., 2009
The paper presents the design guidelines for Active SAR Antennas followed for the development of COSMO Sky Med SAR Antenna Subsystem. They have brought to define the antenna architecture, the RF, and electrical requirements for all the antenna RF, digital and power units, taking into account the available technologies and achievable performance.

A New Age of SAR: How Can Commercial Smallsat Constellations Contribute to NASA's Surface Deformation and Change Mission?

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 12, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract In response to the 2017 Decadal Survey, NASA conducted a five‐year study on the Surface Deformation and Change (SDC) designated observable to study potential mission concepts. As part of the SDC mission study, the Commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (ComSAR) subgroup was tasked with evaluating the current landscape of the SAR and ...

Region-Based Sea Ice Mapping Using Compact Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery with Learned Features and Contextual Information

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
Operational sea ice maps are usually generated manually using dual-polarization (DP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery, but there is strong interest in automating this process.

Baffin Bay Ice Export and Production From Sentinel‐1, the RADARSAT Constellation Mission, and CryoSat‐2: 2016–2022

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 22, 28 November 2024.
Abstract Baffin Bay is located between Greenland and several islands of the Canadian Arctic, providing a conduit for the downstream transport of ice and freshwater to the North Atlantic via Davis Strait. Using satellite observations from Sentinel‐1, the RADARSAT Constellation Mission, and CryoSat‐2, we estimated the sea ice export through Davis Strait ...

Operational Surface Water Detection and Monitoring Using Radarsat 2

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
Traditional on-site methods for mapping and monitoring surface water extent are prohibitively expensive at a national scale within Canada. Despite successful cost-sharing programs between the provinces and the federal government, an extensive number of ...

Vertical Carbon Export During a Phytoplankton Bloom in the Chukchi Sea: Physical Setting and Frontal Subduction

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 129, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract In order to quantify pelagic‐benthic coupling on high‐latitude shelves, it is imperative to identify the different physical mechanisms by which phytoplankton are exported to the sediments. In June–July 2023, a field program documented the evolution of an under‐ice phytoplankton bloom on the northeast Chukchi shelf.

Toward Comprehensive Understanding of Air‐Sea Interactions Under Tropical Cyclones: On the Importance of High Resolution and Multi‐Modal Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 19, 16 October 2024.
Abstract The three‐dimensional structure of the Tropical Cyclone's baroclinic wake is synthesized as an averaged baroclinic‐dominant response of the upper ocean. The resulting persisting sea surface depression can easily be monitored using the present‐day altimeter constellation.
