Numerical Modeling of Tank Cars Carrying Hazardous Materials With and Without Composite Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Large‐scale puncture models consisting of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) tank car with protective steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) are solved numerically. Tank car plate with added 10.91–13.33 mm thick S–S CMF layer does not puncture. Protective S–S CMF absorbs impact energy, reduces plate deformation, and prevents shear bands formation ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

An Autonomous Incremental Learning Algorithm for Radial Basis Function Networks

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Learning Systems and Applications, 2010
In this paper, an incremental learning model called Resource Allocating Network with Long-Term Memory (RAN-LTM) is extended such that the learning is conducted with some autonomy for the following functions: 1) data collection for initial learning, 2) data normalization, 3) addition of radial basis functions (RBFs), and 4) determination of RBF cen-ters

Influence of drainage reconstruction on radial increment of conifers: case study

open access: yesResearch for Rural Development, 2020
Drainage ensures flow of water and access of oxygen to the roots of the trees. Therefore, melioration systems have been established in a third of the forest area of Latvia, and for the most part highly productive stands can be observed in these areas. Water flow in these systems is often stopped by beaver dams.

A model for vortical plumes in rotating convection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In turbulent rotating convection a typical flow structuring in columnar vortices is observed. In the internal structure of these vortices several symmetries are approximately satisfied.

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

Incremental Leaning and Model Selection for Radial Basis Function Network through Sleep [PDF]

open access: yesIEICE Transactions on Information and Systems, 2007
The model selection for neural networks is an essential procedure to get not only high levels of generalization but also a compact data model. Especially in terms of getting the compact model, neural networks usually outperform other kinds of machine learning methods.

NanoMOF‐Based Multilevel Anti‐Counterfeiting by a Combination of Visible and Invisible Photoluminescence and Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents novel anti‐counterfeiting tags with multilevel security features that utilize additional disguise features. They combine luminescent nanosized Ln‐MOFs with conductive polymers to multifunctional mixed‐matrix membranes and powder composites. The materials exhibit visible/NIR emission and matrix‐based conductivity even as black bodies.
