A Discussion on Volute Design Method for Radial Inflow Turbines
Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A and B, 2009This paper discusses the external volute design methods for radial inflow turbines. First the existing 1-D methods are reviewed and the difficulty for such methods to completely define the volute geometry is highlighted. A method to partially overcome this difficulty is presented. To fully solve the problem, multi-dimensional methods are required.

Current Technology of Radial-Inflow Turbines for Compressible Fluids
Journal of Engineering for Power, 1962Radial turbines have been used for hydraulic, steam, and gas turbine service. In hydraulic turbine practice, a substantial regime of specific speed is reserved exclusively for Francis turbines. No similar situation is found with compressible fluids, where axial turbines are used for the entire specific speed range of practical interest.
