Abstract: The carcinogenic effects of ionizing radiation are well documented at high doses and high dose rates. Equipment to detect, identify, and measure radioactivity is a key component in the safe and responsible development of nuclear science and technology. Whether designed to monitor radioactive processes, provide an alert, or characterize the radiation measured, these systems “see” what is undetectable to human senses.

Ionizing radiation and the physician.
Canadian Medical Association journal, 1998The increasing awareness of the medical profession and the general public of the dangers associated with ionizing radiation necessitates a thorough understanding by the physician of the uses and dangers of this hazard. In addition to their application in the fields of diagnosis and therapeutic radiology, x-rays and radioisotopes are increasingly used ...

Sterilization by ionizing radiation
AORN Journal, 1977Ionizing radiation for sterilization is an established procedure in industry for the processing of medical products. It has replaced other techniques because of its reliability, economy, and freedom in packaging.

Ionizing Radiations and the Surgeon
The British Journal of Radiology, 1959When I saw the names of the distinguished men who had preceded me in this pleasant duty, I felt very humble. I realised what a very great honour you have done me by inviting me to give this address; but if I am ill-equipped in regard to knowledge I can claim one attribute which might qualify me for the task.

Ionizing Radiations and Cancer
1954Publisher Summary Ionizing radiation has several important relationships with cancer. Two of these—the production of cancer by radiation and the destructive effects of radiation on the neoplastic process—are discussed in this chapter. The effect of radiation on tumor immunity is also explored.

GENETIC EFFECTS OF IONIZING RADIATION
Canadian Journal of Biochemistry and Physiology, 1960Evidence relating to the probable genetic consequences of exposing large human populations to low levels of ionizing radiations is reviewed. There is little reason to doubt that the production of mutations varies linearly with dose even at very low doses, and that most of the mutations have undesirable effects.

INTERACTION OF IONIZING RADIATION WITH MATTER
Health Physics, 2004The basic physical mechanisms by which different kinds of ionizing radiation interact with matter are described. Understanding of these processes, coupled with detailed knowledge of atomic structure, provides much of the foundation for the theory and practice of radiological health protection today.
