Expression and intracellular localization of FKHRL1 in mammary gland neoplasms. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
FKHRL1 (FOXO3a), a member of the Forkhead family of genes, has been considered to be involved in the development of breast tumors; however, the in vivo expression and activation status of FKHRL1 in breast tumors still remains unclear.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Delayed malignant appendiceal fistula with ileal conduit following radical cystectomy: A case report

open access: yesUrology Case Reports
Fistula formation after radical cystectomy is rare, often presenting early and involving the small bowel. Herein we describe a case of an appendiceal fistula in a patient who underwent chemoradiotherapy and pelvic exenteration over a decade prior to the ...

Interventions for treating oral mucositis for patients with cancer receiving treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background Treatment of cancer is increasingly effective but is associated with short and long term side effects. Oral and gastrointestinal side effects, including oral candidiasis, remain a major source of illness despite the use of a variety of agents ...

Insights into a long life without cancer: The case of the bowhead whale

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Long‐lived, large‐bodied organisms have evolved powerful anticancer mechanisms that preserve cellular and tissue integrity across extended lifespans. A recent study by Firsanov et al. shows that greater genome stability is a key factor underlying the remarkable longevity and cancer resistance of one such species, the bowhead whale.

Evaluating the Justification of Computed Tomography (CT) Scan Requests to Reduce the Risk of Radiation-Induced Cancers

open access: yesمجله دانشکده پزشکی اصفهان, 2018
Background: Ionizing radiation used in computed tomography (CT) has a carcinogenic risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the justification of CT scan requests by physicians in Kashani hospital, Isfahan, Iran.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma: emerging role of translocations and gene fusions. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), the second most common salivary gland malignancy, is notorious for poor prognosis, which reflects the propensity of ACC to progress to clinically advanced metastatic disease.

Circulating tumor cell viability during and after radiotherapy mirrors treatment response in cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Radiotherapy (RT) response depends on the DNA repair capacity of tumor and host cells. We show that circulating tumor cell (CTC) counts and apoptosis rates before and after RT predict treatment response and outcome, which can be accessed via easily accessible liquid biopsy approaches. Created in BioRender. Wikman, H.

Pathological and genomic phenotype of second neuroendocrine carcinoma during long-term follow-up after radical radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma

open access: yesRadiation Oncology, 2021
Background Second head and neck neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) after radical radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treatment is rarely reported.

Hypothesis of the basic biological sense of cancer revisited: a putative explanation of Peto's paradox [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The conventional interpretation of cancer, summarized in the unified genetic theory of carcinogenesis, assumes that the malignant cell is the anatomical and physiological unit of cancer.
