Radiation exchange

Applied Optics, 1987
The desirability of including more material on radiation exchange in introductory physics courses is discussed. The theory of radiation exchange is presented along with the development of the concepts of radiance and field of view. A simple lecture demonstration showing that everything is radiating is discussed.

Microdosimetry and radiation quality determinations in radiation protection and radiation therapy

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2011
Beams of different radiation qualities may, for equal absorbed dose, lead to important differences in the degree of harm for a specific biological endpoint. In many practical situations absorbed dose is then not a sufficient measure when for instance the same treatment result or risk level is the focus of attention.

Ageing and Radiation

Nature, 1960
A discussion is presented of the view that whole-body irradiation of an animal can, in certain circumstances, speed up natural aging. In survival studies of chronically irradiated CBA mice, kept under certain conditions so that external disturbing factors were minimized, mean life shortening of a group of mice is roughly proportional to the mean ...

Radiation and Radiation Disorders

2019
With current technologies, radiation doses associated with exploration and habitation missions to the Moon and Mars may well exceed the limits currently defined for LEO operations. Assessment of the radiation protection needed during interplanetary and remote planetary missions should include consideration of several key technologies, such as ...

Radiation And Radiation Transport

1996
Abstract This chapter covers the fundamental definitions and laws of thermal radiation, elementary spectroscopy, radiation transport, absorption and scattering by particles. and radiation transport in the presence of scattering particles.

Absorbed radiation dose in radiation synovectomy

The British Journal of Radiology, 1978
The intra-articular injection of colloids containing β-particle emitting radionuclides has been shown to help in controlling synovial inflammation in a range of joints (Ansell et al., 1963; Grahame et al., 1970; Gumpel, 1973; Menkes et al., 1977), and in the knee Gumpel and Coles (1975) have shown the technique to be the treatment of choice for the ...

Radiation transport calculations for cosmic radiation

Annals of the ICRP, 2012
The radiation environment inside and near spacecraft consists of various components of primary radiation in space and secondary radiation produced by the interaction of the primary radiation with the walls and equipment of the spacecraft. Radiation fields inside astronauts are different from those outside them, because of the body's self-shielding as ...

Interaction of hyperthermia and radiation: radiation quality

The British Journal of Radiology, 1981
Cell-survival data were collected to determine the survival response of asynchronous CHO cells subjects to radiation and hyperthermia. The irradiation was at room temperature 100 minutes before exposure to hyperthermia at 42 degrees C. The survival response to the combination of these two agents is expressed by means of a survival surface, a three ...

Radiation Damping and the Polarization of Fluorescence Radiation

Physical Review, 1934
If the distance between two or more energy levels is comparable to their natural breadth, the levels cease to act independently. The coupling between the levels is then describable by means of a "damping constant matrix." The usual discussions concern themselves with a diagonal damping constant.

Radiation and pregnancy

Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1973
Irradiation during pregnancy may occur either as the result of radioactive pollution of the environment, or during a medical procedure using x-rays or radionuclides. While the former is usually unforeseeable, the latter is known and accepted by both physician and patient.Recent statistics estimate that about one quarter of pregnant women have had a ...
