Sublethal Injury and Viable but Non-culturable (VBNC) State in Microorganisms During Preservation of Food and Biological Materials by Non-thermal Processes

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
The viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state, as well as sublethal injury of microorganisms pose a distinct threat to food safety, as the use of traditional, culture-based microbiological analyses might lead to an underestimation or a misinterpretation of ...

A significant role of non-thermal equilibrated electrons in the formation of deleterious complex DNA damage.

open access: yesPhysical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP, 2018
Although most of the radiation damage to genomic DNA could be rendered harmless using repair enzymes in a living cell, a certain fraction of the damage is persistent resulting in serious genetic effects, such as mutation induction. In order to understand

Significance of heat and mass transport in peristaltic flow of Jeffrey material subject to chemical reaction and radiation phenomenon through a tapered channel

open access: yesOpen Physics, 2023
Using mathematical modeling and computational analysis, this study aims to examine the peristaltic blood flow of a non-Newtonian material in a tapered channel with radiative heat flux and response mechanisms. By utilizing a long-wavelength approximation,

Particle acceleration and non-thermal emission in the pulsar outer magnetospheric gap [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2008
A two-dimensional electrodynamic model is used to study particle acceleration and non-thermal emission mechanisms in the pulsar magnetosphere. We solve the distribution of the accelerating electric field with the emission process and the pair-creation ...

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

Mechanisms of the Non-Thermal Exposure Effects of Non-Ionizing Millimeter Waves Radiation on Eukaryotic Cells for Improving Technological Precision Enabling Novel Biomedical Applications

open access: yes, 2020
Nonionizing millimeter-waves (MMW) are reported to interact with cells in a variety of ways. Possible mechanisms of the inhibited cell division effect were investigated using 85-105 GHz MMW irradiation within the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) non-thermal 20 mW/cm2 safety standards.

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.
