The Inhomogeneity Effect. III. Weather Impacts on the Heat Flow of Hot Jupiters

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The interior flux of a giant planet impacts atmospheric motion, and the atmosphere dictates the interior’s cooling. Here we use a non-hydrostatic general circulation model (Simulating Non-hydrostatic Atmospheres on Planets) coupled with a multi-stream ...

Competing effects of surface albedo and orographic elevated heating on regional climate

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2017
All else being equal, a given atmospheric pressure level is thought to be warmer over a plateau than over surrounding nonelevated terrain because of orographic “elevated heating.” However, elevated surfaces are also typically brighter due to reduced ...

Response of precipitation extremes to warming: what have we learned from theory and idealized cloud-resolving simulations, and what remains to be learned?

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2020
This paper reviews recent important advances in our understanding of the response of precipitation extremes to warming from theory and from idealized cloud-resolving simulations.

Fine Vertical Resolution Radiative‐Convective Equilibrium Experiments: Roles of Turbulent Mixing on the High‐Cloud Response to Sea Surface Temperatures

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2019
In this study, the vertical resolution dependency of the high‐cloud fraction response on the increase in sea surface temperature was investigated via radiative‐convective equilibrium simulations.

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Irradiated Atmospheres. III. Radiative-convective-mixing Equilibrium for Nongray Picket-fence Model

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The nongray picket-fence model predicts more accurately the temperatures in low-density regions compared to semigray models. This study investigates how the vertical-mixing and convection fluxes modify the picket-fence model.

Influence of Scan Strategies in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion on Solidification, Microstructure, and High‐Temperature Compressive Properties of γ′‐Strengthened Inconel 738LC

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Experiments and thermophysical simulations were conducted to investigate the electron beam powder bed fusion electron beam (PBF‐EB/M) process for the γ′‐strengthened nickel‐based superalloy Inconel 738LC. The results demonstrate the impact of process‐induced microstructural variations on high‐temperature mechanical behavior, providing a basis for ...

Properties, Changes, and Controls of Deep‐Convecting Clouds in Radiative‐Convective Equilibrium

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2022
Changes in tropical high clouds associated with deep convection with warming are one of the largest sources of uncertainty in climate feedbacks. Here, we leverage an ensemble of models of many types in an idealized configuration to investigate how and ...

Shaping Matter with Acoustic Waves: From Particles to Functional Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Acoustic‐directed assembly is reviewed as a materials‐oriented strategy for organizing particles, polymers, metals, and biological systems into functional structures. The review distinguishes reversible manipulation from permanent structure formation through medium fixation, particle fixation, and in situ material generation, highlighting routes toward

Explicitly Resolved Cloud Feedbacks in the Radiative‐Convective Equilibrium Model Intercomparison Project

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
Radiative‐convective equilibrium (RCE) is particularly well suited for studying tropical deep‐convection, a regime of clouds that contributes some of the highest uncertainties to the estimates of total cloud feedback.
