The risks of the avant-garde: Hannes Meyer, from mathematical precision to the defense of ideology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
La posición radical de Hannes Meyer en torno a una arquitectura funcional, ajena a toda relación con la historia y la cultura del lugar, que favorece un lenguaje universal basado en la precisión matemática, se manifiesta en sus proyectos para los ...

High‐κ Perovskite‐Like Ternary Niobium Oxide Dielectrics for 2D Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
High‐κ dielectrics are vital for scaled electronics. Here, a family of 2D high‐κ perovskite‐like ternary niobium oxides is synthesized via a molten salt‐assisted method. Their integration into FETs and logic gates reveals superior switching characteristics, providing a fresh material platform and new insights for the advancement of high‐performance 2D ...

Efficient Non‐Invasive Rejuvenation of Spent Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries Through Controlled Overdischarge

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This strategy rejuvenates spent lithium iron phosphate battery by non‐invasively targeting Li+ trapped within the solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI). This method mitigates copper dissolution and reduces Li/Fe antisite defects, achieving 9.56% capacity recovery and 214 cycles lifespan extension. The process requires only 3 MJ kg−1 of energy and emitting

Conservatism

open access: yes, 2011
The term 'conservative' - denoting groups as diverse and incompatible as the religious right, libertarian free-marketeers and free-spending neocons - has been lost to politics.

Complexity, strategic thinking and organisational change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Comparative considerations of strategy from complexity paradigm and Newtonian paradigm perspectives are discussed in the light of three ideological dispositions towards the future. We term them defensive, opportunist, and goal oriented.

Pattern Formation in Non‐Equilibrium Architected Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This article demonstrates an artificial mechanical system ‐ a robotic metamaterial ‐ as an accessible and versatile platform within which to explore and prescribe the reaction‐diffusion driven pattern formation hitherto associated with comparatively less accessible and versatile non‐equilibrium biological and chemical systems.

Improved Disorder Resilience in Small‐Footprint Photonic Cavities with Periodicity Breaking

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Compact photonic crystal cavities with engineered aperiodicity are demonstrated to sustain high quality factormodes and enhanced reproducibility within a minimal footprint. Combining numerical optimization and near‐field measurements, the study reveals how controlled periodicity breaking improves disorder resilience, offering a robust and scalable ...

El escepticismo en el pensamiento político e histórico de David Hume [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This essay argues that Hume’s political and historical thought is well read as skeptical and skeptical in a way that roots it deeply in the Hellenistic traditions of both Pyrrhonian and Academical thought. It deploys skeptical instruments to undermine

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Conservatism, epistemology, risk and mind

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper, I comment on recent contributions to the debate about what conservatism is, and delineate something central or even essential to conservatism as very broadly defined as “an ideology predominantly concerned with the problem of change: not ...
