Underdiagnosis of Von Willebrand Disease: The Silent Majority of Women in Brazil

open access: yesHaemophilia, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. Although autosomal inheritance predicts a similar distribution between sexes, women are more often diagnosed due to hemostatic challenges associated with menstruation and childbirth.

Living With Factor VII Deficiency—A Mixed Methods Study

open access: yesHaemophilia, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Factor VII deficiency (FVIID) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, resulting in potentially unpredictable and life‐threatening bleeding. The prevalence of symptomatic patients is 1 in 300,000. Treatment is mostly given following bleeding, but those with the lowest levels may be offered prophylaxis.

Additional sectioning and AI‐assisted diagnosis reveal underdiagnosis of serous (pre)malignancies in fallopian tube specimen from BRCA1/2 carriers

open access: yesHistopathology, EarlyView.
This paper shows that deeper sections reveal additional STICs and HGSCs in risk‐reducing salpingo‐oophorectomy specimens of patients who did not have a STIC or HGSC diagnosis but did develop peritoneal HGSC 10 years after surgery. This adds to the premise that HGSC originates in the fallopian tube.

Multiscale analysis of the adult human superior hypogastric plexus and hypogastric nerve

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Using tissue clearing and light‐sheet microscopy methods, we visualized the 3D mesoscopic arrangement of neural tracts, blood vessels and neurons within the adult human superior hypogastric plexus and hypogastric nerves, identifying the latter to contain thousands of neuronal cells bodies embedded along its entire length.

Counter‐Plantation Imaginaries: Deproletarianisation and Struggle for Autonomy in India

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines the decline of the 2015 Pembillai Orumai movement in India's Munnar tea belt as an event revealing the dialectical relationship between labour struggle and agrarian capitalism within the plantation complex. Although widely celebrated for securing wage gains through a historic Dalit woman–led strike, the movement's rapid ...

Associations Between Mental Health Conditions and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Among Active‐Duty Servicewomen

open access: yesPaediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Active‐duty servicewomen (ADSW) are at increased risk for mental health conditions compared to civilian women. Research suggests women with mental health conditions experience serious pregnancy complications at rates 50% higher than those without mental health conditions; yet research in military populations is limited. Objective To

Prioritising parameters to minimise blood transfusions for postpartum haemorrhage: A machine learning study using national population data

open access: yesTransfusion Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) accounts for approximately 27% of maternal deaths worldwide and often requires blood transfusion, along with its associated risks. In resource‐rich settings like South Korea, transfusion disparities persist, highlighting the need for predictive tools to optimise patient blood management (PBM).

The acute effects of exercise intensity and inorganic nitrate supplementation on the Buckberg ratio in postmenopausal females

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Menopause increases coronary heart disease risk, in part through reduced oestrogen‐mediated nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. The Buckberg ratio, an index of myocardial oxygen supply–demand balance, in which higher values reflect more favourable myocardial perfusion, is lower in postmenopausal females (PMFs) than in age‐matched males.

TMEM16A chloride channels in the female reproductive tract and their role in normal and dysfunctional pregnancy and labour

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend TMEM16A plays a pivotal role in setting the duration of the action potential plateau in human uterine smooth muscle. An increase in TMEM16A expression in labour underpins a lengthening of the plateau and this provides time for the contraction to become larger and longer, important for timely successful labour.

Placental mitochondrial metabolic adaptation maintains cellular energy balance in pregnancy complicated by gestational hypoxia

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Placental mitochondrial adaptation to gestational hypoxia. Hypoxic pregnancy in sheep increases placental insulin like growth factor 2 (IGF2) signalling (1), which is associated with a shift in capacity away from β‐oxidation (2) and complex I‐mediated respiration (3), while maintaining total oxidative phosphorylation capacity (4).
