Mobile and portable telephone systems present some unique engineering challenges. One of these is their use of radio wave propagation, with its highly variable path characteristics. Another is the fact that the switching system no longer can count on a given subscriber set simply being at the end of a corresponding wire pair.

For several years, GEC-Marconi Hazeltine (GMH) and Northrop Grumman Corp. (NGC) have been developing and field demonstrating a common module programmable digital radio (PDR) for army, air force and navy applications. This third generation 1.5 MHz to 2 GHz software radio handles not only the traditional narrow band waveforms (HF, VHF, UHF), but also ...

Digital audio technology, though only a decade old in broadcasting, is being so comprehensively integrated into control rooms and studios that the time for wake-up calls to critics and theorists is past. Based on eight years' observation at BBC Radio and Danmarks Radio studios, this article speculates on how the new technology of radio is shaped by ...

Digital-to-radio converter for software radio
11th IEEE International Symposium on Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications. PIMRC 2000. Proceedings (Cat. No.00TH8525), 2002We have proposed a digital-to-radio (D/R) converter that can directly change a digital signal generated by a logic circuit into a radio signal. This D/R converter enables an RF circuit and an antenna to be composed of one simple device, and the radio can be directly controlled by software; this is the essence of software radio.

Delivering digits to rural radios: making Digital Radio Mondiale work
2nd European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2007), 2007This paper describes work done at BBC research towards ensuring that Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) can be received reliably by our listeners. Our work in testing the first generation of consumer receivers is briefly described, followed by a detailed description of methods which next- generation receivers might use to extend reliable reception to a ...

Digital cellular radio systems
1989In the last chapter, the use of established analogue modulation techniques was described in the context of high-capacity cellular radio telephone applications. Conclusions regarding existing systems operation and future developments may be drawn, and these centre on the issue of capacity.
