Layer optimized SAR processing and slope estimation in radar sounder data
Englacial layers in Antarctica and Greenland are indicators of the dynamic, rheological and subglacial configuration of the ice sheets. Airborne radar sounder data is the primary remote sensing solution for directly observing englacial layers and ...

Polarization Changes of Radio Signals in Vertical Radio-Echo Sounding of Glaciers [PDF]
An electromagnetic linearly-polarized signal transmitted through the glacier in a vertical direction, reflected from the bedrock, and received with a receiving antenna, is found to be changed into one either partially or elliptically polarized. The polarization changes are believed to be due mainly to the crystal structure of the glacier and anisotropy

Airborne radio echo sounding on the Shirase Glacier and its drainage basin, East Antarctica
Airborne radio echo sounding carried out on the Shirase Glacier and its drainage basin in January 1980 is described. The new sounder (NIPR-A) was operated at 179 MHz on board a Pilatus Porter PC-6.

A compact lightweight multipurpose ground-penetrating radar for glaciological applications
We describe a compact lightweight impulse radar for radio-echo sounding of subsurface structures designed specifically for glaciological applications. The radar operates at frequencies between 10 and 75 MHz.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Radio Echo-Sounding of Riiser-Larsenisen (Abstract only) [PDF]
The Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition 1978–79 used the Scott Polar Research Institute Mk IV radio echo-sounding system fitted in a Bell 206B helicopter to survey 620 km of Riiser-Larsenisen and 100 km across the outer part of Stancomb-Wills Ice Stream.

The WISDOM Radar: Unveiling the Subsurface Beneath the ExoMars Rover and Identifying the Best Locations for Drilling [PDF]
The search for evidence of past or present life on Mars is the principal objective of the 2020 ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Rover mission. If such evidence is to be found anywhere, it will most likely be in the subsurface, where organic molecules are shielded ...

Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for
