Little penguins select more isolated nest boxes for breeding, but lay date influences breeding success

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 6, August 2026.
We determined that more isolated and possibly older nest boxes were selected by little penguins for breeding at Pōhatu/Flea Bay, New Zealand. However, breeding success was influenced by lay date in comparison to nest box characteristics. These findings inform immediate conservation recommendations regarding nest box design and placement.

Evaluating the efficacy of tagging adhesives for insect tracking

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 28, Issue 3, Page 515-521, August 2026.
Two‐part epoxy resin delivered the strongest RFID tag adhesion on carabid beetles, exceeding polyvinyl acetate, cosmetic latex and cyanoacrylate adhesives. Adhesive performance was consistent across Harpalus, Leistus and Poecilus; species effects were non‐significant, supporting a broadly applicable protocol for carabid RFID tagging studies.

Cognitive Deficits in Female GPR158 Knockout Mice Revealed by Automated Home‐Cage Testing

open access: yesGenes, Brain and Behavior, Volume 25, Issue 4, August 2026.
This study examined the role of GPR158 in cognitive function using both traditional and automated home‐cage paradigms that allow for testing in a social environment. Results showed that female GPR158 showed impairment in spatial learning and cognitive flexibility.

Cybersecurity in aquaculture: Risks, governance, and future directions across production systems

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract Aquaculture is becoming increasingly dependent on connected sensors, remote monitoring, edge and cloud analytics, automation, and digital traceability; however, the cybersecurity evidence base remains fragmented and low‐trophic systems are markedly underrepresented.
