Massive galaxies with very young AGN

open access: yes, 2007
Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxies are generally thought to be the young counterparts of classical extended radio sources and live in massive ellipticals.

The simplicity of physical laws

open access: yesNoûs, EarlyView.
Abstract Physical laws are strikingly simple, yet there is no a priori reason for them to be so. I propose that nomic realists—Humeans and non‐Humeans—should recognize simplicity as a fundamental epistemic guide for discovering and evaluating candidate physical laws.

Exploring Neutral Hydrogen in Radio MOlecular Hydrogen Emission Galaxies (MOHEGs) and Prospects with the SKA

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Empirical studies of cold gas content are essential for comprehending the star formation activities and evolution in galaxies. However, it is not straightforward to understand these processes because they depend on various physical properties of the ...

VLA observations of a sample of galaxies with high far-infrared luminosities [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Preliminary results are presented from a radio survey of galaxies detected by the IRAS minisurvey. It was found that the main difference between galaxies selected in the far infrared and those selected in the optical is that the former have higher radio ...

Lessons from the void: What Boltzmann brains teach

open access: yesAnalytic Philosophy, EarlyView.
Abstract Some physical theories predict that almost all brains in the universe are Boltzmann brains, that is, short‐lived disembodied brains that are accidentally assembled as a result of thermodynamic or quantum fluctuations. Physicists and philosophers of physics widely regard this proliferation as unacceptable, and so take its prediction as a basis ...

Nonparametric inference for Poisson‐Laguerre tessellations

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Statistics, EarlyView.
Abstract In this paper, we consider statistical inference for Poisson‐Laguerre tessellations in ℝd$$ {\mathbb{R}}^d $$. The object of interest is a distribution function F$$ F $$ which describes the distribution of the arrival times of the generator points.

A Radio View of the Sky: the Cosmic History of Star-Forming and AGN Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We explore the cosmic evolution of radio detected star forming (SF) galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN), drawn from the VLA-COSMOS survey, out to z = 1.3.

Jets and outflows in Radio Galaxies: implications for AGN feedback

open access: yes, 2011
One of the main debated astrophysical problems is the role of the AGN feedback in galaxy formation. It is known that massive black holes have a profound effect on the formation and evolution of galaxies, but how black holes and galaxies communicate is ...

Radio Continuum Surveys of the Galaxy and Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2002
Radio sky surveys give us basic information about the origin of the radio emission from the Galaxy. By mapping the sky at several radio frequencies a separation of the thermal and non-thermal emission components is possible. The major part of the low-frequency radio emission comes from the synchrotron process, the braking of relativistic electrons in ...

Cerebrovascular pulsatility following long duration spaceflight is associated with changes in pulse pressure and carotid artery stiffness

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Central artery stiffening increases the haemodynamic pulsations transmitted downstream towards target organs, including the brain. While recent evidence suggests that long duration spaceflight is associated with reduced common carotid artery (CCA) distensibility, cerebrovascular pulsatility has not been extensively characterized in astronauts.
