Effects of thermal inversion induced air pollution on COVID-19 [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Air pollution is a threat to human health, in particular since it aggravates respiratory diseases. Early COVID-19 outbreaks in Wuhan, China and Lombardy, Italy coincided with high levels of air pollution drawing attention to a potential role of particulate matter and other pollutants in infections and more severe outcomes of the new lung disease.

Foundational guiding principles for a flourishing Earth system

open access: yesBusiness and Society Review, Volume 130, Issue S1, Page 164-182, Spring 2025.
Abstract In this perspectives article, we maintain that the current local to global sustainable development predicaments we face are the result of humanity's impact on the Earth System (ES)—that is to say, on the very systemic fabric of the ES (i.e., its functioning and configuration), combined with an insufficiently coherent application of sustainable

Source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and black carbon at the western coastal areas of the Yellow Sea based on isotopic signatures

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
The stable and radioactive isotopes (δ13C, Δ14C and δ2H) of black carbon (BC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediment from the western coastal areas of the Yellow Sea (i.e.

The virtues of limits and environmental sustainability in healthcare

open access: yesBioethics, EarlyView.
Abstract The spectre of human‐induced climate change has drawn attention to the need to discover new, environmentally sustainable approaches to healthcare. This article draws upon David McPherson's The Virtues of Limits (2021) to develop a virtue ethics for sustainability in healthcare.

Scientists' warning on the need for greater inclusion of dragonflies in global conservation

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Stressors to dragonflies are multiple, and in many cases interactive. Specialist species are at risk, while generalists can benefit from some human activities. Dragonflies are sentinels for conservation, being promising surrogates for other taxa while also being appealing to citizen science initiatives.

Multilevel Monte Carlo and Improved Timestepping Methods in Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
A common way to simulate the transport and spread of pollutants in the atmosphere is via stochastic Lagrangian dispersion models. Mathematically, these models describe turbulent transport processes with stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The computational bottleneck is the Monte Carlo algorithm, which simulates the motion of a large number of ...

Time Scales of the Fredrickson-Andersen Model on Polluted $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ and $\mathbb{Z}^{3}$ [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
We study the Kinetically Constrained Model on the polluted square lattice, with two-neighbor constraints. For a quenched polluted environment with low pollution density we give bounds on the infection time of the origin.

Climate Justice Strategies Implemented by Public Health Nurses and Their Community Partners

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Nursing, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To describe nurses' and community‐based organization representatives' collaborative strategies for advancing climate justice with communities. Design This study used a descriptive, qualitative research design. Methods Data were gathered from August 2022 to February 2023 with nurses (n = 8) and their community partners (n = 5) in the United
