Radioactive pollution

Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Section B. Biological Sciences, 1987
SynopsisThe meaning to be assigned to “pollution” is discussed and an account given of the “natural” sources of radiation. The effects of radiation on human populations are described. The artificial sources of radiation in the environment associated with energy productions are reviewed.

Birds as objects in bioindication of radioactive pollution

Acta Biologica Hungarica, 1999
This article is a review the recent results of research in the accumulation of natural and artificial radionuclides in birds from Russia (Adigea, Krasnodar, Rostov, Astrahan and Moscow regions, Novaya Zemlya isles), Ukraine, Vietnam, Poland, Ethiophia and Mongolia after global precipitation and local pollution, such as in the East-Urals radioactive ...

Radioactive Pollution

2002
Radiation that, on passage through matter, produces ions by knocking electrons out of their orbits is called ionizing radiation. This radiation is produced through decomposition of unstable, naturally occurring or synthetic elements referred to as radionuclides. The four types of radiation are ∝-particles, β-particles, γ-rays, and neutrons.

Pollution with Radioactive Substances

2017
Our world is radioactive since the beginning of the universe. Life has learned to resist against highly energetic radiation from natural sources originating from so-called primordial and cosmogenic radionuclides, but in addition the presence of natural radioactivity, man has introduced artificial radionuclides into the environment by various nuclear ...

Radioactivity and Fallout: The Model Pollution

BioScience, 1969
to a solution of certain other analogous pollution problems, especially those we have now with pesticides, which appear to be the world's most dangerous pollutants. First, the attitudes that allowed worldwide contamination of the earth with radioactivity and which now allow other even more serious pollutions are important and still dominant, although ...

Radioactive factors in water pollution

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1962
AbstractThis paper is primarily concerned with the introduction of radionuclides into bodies of water as a result of nuclear reactor operations. When radioactive materials are dispersed in surface waters, several factors such as water usage and biological concentration in human food chains must be considered.

Efficiency, Equity and Pollution: The Case of Radioactive Waste [PDF]

open access: possibleEnvironment and Planning A: Economy and Space, 1987
The absence of compensation for third parties who are the victims of residual (that is, permitted) pollution can entail a violation of Rawls's second principle of justice. Environmental pollution, insofar as it is an uncharged cost, may lead also to an economically inefficient distribution of goods and services.

Meteorological Aspects of Radioactivity Pollution

1959
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews that radioactivity is well recognized as an inevitable concomitant of life today and also as a potentially deleterious factor. Meteorological processes are of considerable importance in determining the extent of radiation exposure from airborne radioactivity, whether it arises from the naturally occurring radon ...
