Atomic Batteries: Energy from Radioactivity [PDF]
With alternate, sustainable, natural sources of energy being sought after, there is new interest in energy from radioactivity, including natural and waste radioactive materials. A study of various atomic batteries is presented with perspectives of development and comparisons of performance parameters and cost. We discuss radioisotope thermal generators,

Engineered Living Energy Materials
Engineered living energy materials (ELEMs) are nascent research frontier for enabling sustainable energy conversion and storage. These materials exhibit unique characteristics such as self‐regeneration, biodegradability, environmental response, and evolutionary adaptability. This paper overviews different energy conversion bio‐modules, summarizes their

Linear thermal expansion behavior of compacted bentonite buffer materials
In a geological repository system, buffer is indispensable to ensure the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). Because heat generated from spent nuclear fuel in a canister is released to the surrounding buffers, thermal properties of such ...

Laser induced nuclear waste transmutation [PDF]
When producing electricity that collects the mass energy that is available at the time of the induced disintegration of radioactive elements, other unstable elements are produced with half-life span durations ranging from less than one second to hundreds of thousands of years and which are considered as waste. Managing nuclear waste with a half-life of

Clays in radioactive waste disposal
AbstractClays and argillites are considered in some countries as possible host rocks for nuclear waste disposal at great depth. The use of compacted swelling clays as engineered barriers is also considered within the framework of the multi-barrier concept. In relation to these concepts, various research programs have been conducted to assess the thermo-

Dating the Middle Palaeolithic of Fumane Cave by the combined ESR/U‐series method
ABSTRACT Fumane Cave, located in Northern Italy, is a major prehistoric site for understanding late Neandertal and early modern human behaviours. The cave contains a 12‐m‐thick stratigraphic sequence of Middle and Upper Palaeolithic layers, which have yielded a number of flint artefacts and faunal remains.

Today one of the major challenges facing by mankind is to provide proper management for radioactive waste management. Any industrial activity results in generation of some waste material. Nuclear industry is no exception and the presence of radiation emitting radioactive materials which may have adverse impact on living beings and which is likely to ...
