On the Conservatisms of Nepheline Predictors for Canister Centerline Cooled (CCC) High‐Level Waste (HLW) Glasses

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Glass Science, Volume 17, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Multiple models and feature sets have been generated, which attempt to predict the crystallization of nepheline (NaAlSiO4) in high‐level radioactive waste (HLW) glasses under canister centerline cooling (CCC) conditions. Earlier models were found to be overly conservative, while newer models had a not insignificant rate of false positives and ...

Near-field/far-field interface of a near-surface low level radioactive waste site

open access: yes, 2004
Experimental and Modelling studies have been used to investigate the biogeochemical processes occurring at the interface zone between the near-field and far-field of the Drigg Low- Level radioactive Waste (LLW) trenches.

Role of Unsaturated Zone on Aquifer Leakage–Assessed With Tidal Response

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 11, 16 June 2026.
Abstract Tidal response analysis is widely used to evaluate aquifer systems, but traditional models that neglect the unsaturated zone often underestimate groundwater leakage. This study develops a new analytical model for tidal analysis that incorporates unsaturated zone effects and explained leakage patterns that traditional models could not resolve ...

Study on legal responsibility regarding disposal of radioactive waste

open access: yes, 2015
The issue of disposal of radioactive waste in Japan is extremely important especially after the accident of Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011.

Experimental Study on Influencing Factors of GMZ Bentonite Generating Colloids

open access: yesYuanzineng kexue jishu
Bentonite, as a buffering and backfilled material in high level radioactive waste disposal repository, will produce colloids when interacting with groundwater in near field.

Tracking of [14C]Polystyrene Nanoplastics in Pregnant Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 32, 9 June 2026.
This study investigates [14C]polystyrene nanoplastic ([14C]PS) translocation in late‐stage pregnant mice after intranasal (0.5 mg of [14C]PS on GD12, GD14, and GD16, n = 6) and intravenous administration (1.5 mg of [14C]PS on GD16, n = 6). 14C‐radiolabel allows quantitative tracking of unmodified polystyrene nanoplastics.

The unexpected influence of microbiology on the disposal of radioactive waste [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The safe disposal of radioactive waste in repositories constructed deep underground might not sound like a topic that requires much input from microbiologists, but a surprising amount of work has been carried out around the world on how microorganisms ...

Erosion of granular sediments by submerged impinging jets: Particle size effects and cohesion onset

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 72, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the erosion behavior and modeling of glass particle beds under impinging jet conditions, with a focus on particle size effects and the onset of cohesion. Ultrasonic profiling is implemented to scan and measure static crater profiles.

Long-term risk management of nuclear waste : a real options approach [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper, we investigate the optimal timing for deep geological disposal of nuclear waste. Our model is based on the real options approach to investment under uncertainty.
