Iron Age Mediterranean Chronology: A Rejoinder

open access: yes, 2011
This article is a rejoinder to a recent paper in this journal by van der Plicht et al. (2009) who use radiocarbon determinations from several sites in Israel, Italy, Spain, and Tunisia to advocate a High Chronology system for the entire Mediterranean ...

Early to Mid‐Holocene molluscan community dynamics in Billefjorden, central Svalbard: the interplay of local geomorphology and regional climate

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The postglacial evolution of High Arctic coastal environments is recorded in the rich fossiliferous archives of raised marine terraces. This study employs a multi‐proxy approach combining molluscan community analysis, taphonomy and sedimentology to reconstruct the Early to Mid‐Holocene environmental dynamics of the Mimerdalen embayment in the ...

Climatic Signature and Radiocarbon Chronology of Middle and Late Pleniglacial Loess from Eurasia: Comparison with the Marine and Greenland Records

open access: yes, 2009
Recent investigations devoted to the Eurasian loess formations have provided an integrated high-resolution climatic sequence well radiocarbon dated between 13.4 and 42.5 kyr BP on charcoal and wood remains.

Geochemical and granulometric fingerprints of 8200 years of westerly wind variability in inner‐fjord lake sediments from Svalbard

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on Earth. As sea ice diminishes, the surface boundary conditions, such as roughness and air–sea coupling, change and open‐water fetch increases. This may enhance wind forcing on Arctic coasts. Lake sediments can record these changes through the deposition of wind‐blown grains and elements, offering ...

The Radiocarbon Calibration from an Irish Oak Perspective

open access: yes, 2009
Between 1968 and 1984, a 7272-yr oak chronology was constructed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in order to provide a local calibration of the radiocarbon timescale. This single-minded exercise in chronology construction provided an exciting occupation for

The last glacial cycle in western Norway—extensive MIS 5d glaciation, multiple glacial advances and LGM glacial advance phases

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Raised marine MIS 5c sediments evidence extensive preceding (5d) glaciation in western Norway. This is the first out of five (or six) major Weichselian glacier advances that seem to correspond to North Atlantic sea surface cooling periods. Till beds capping the marine sediments show stages of pre‐LGM advance and subsequent retreat.

Lead isotope evidence for Antarctic Ice Sheet changes in the Weddell Sea sector since the Last Glacial Maximum

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The Weddell Sea influences global ocean circulation and sea level through modulating Antarctic Bottom Water formation and Antarctic Ice Sheet discharges, but the history of ice‐sheet dynamics in this region remains poorly constrained due to limited well‐dated geological records.

14C AND THE IRON AGE CHRONOLOGY DEBATE: REHOV, KHIRBET EN-NAHAS, DAN, AND MEGIDDO

open access: yes, 2006
A recently published volume, The Bible and Radiocarbon Dating: Archaeology, Text and Science (Levy and Higham 2005), provides data related to the debate over the chronology of the Iron Age strata in the Levant (for a review, see Carmi 2006).
