Is digital better in dental radiography?

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2008
In Slovenia, dental radiography was the first field in which projection x-ray imaging using digital detectors was done. At present around 30% of intraoral dental x-ray units use digital detectors. Annual test results were analysed to compare digital systems with film-based ones.

Digital Radiography in the Dental Practice: An Update

Primary Dental Journal, 2013
The implementation of digital imaging in dental practice should be considered. The vast number of advantages of digital imaging include time saving and image manipulation. Dose reduction is a big attraction but in practical terms this might not be fully taken advantage of, as a number of studies suggest.

A digital subtraction technique for dental radiography

Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1983
The relative accessibility and stability of the teeth facilitate generation of geometrically identical radiographs over a period of time. When such radiographs are digitized with the aid of a TV camera coupled to an analog to digital converter and a computer, it is possible to conveniently produce subtraction images of high diagnostic value.

Local Diagonal Maxima-Minima Pattern-based Edge Detection Technique for Ultrasound and Digital Radiography Images

Journal of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, 2021
This paper presents a low dimensional edge descriptor, based on local diagonal and non-diagonal maxima-minima pattern for medical images. The methods utilize local relationship of a middle pixel to its diagonal/non-diagonal maxima-minima.

A simplified method to obtain perceptibility curves for direct dental digital radiography.

open access: yesDentomaxillofacial Radiology, 1999
OBJECTIVES To derive and test a simplified method to construct Perceptibility Curves (PCs) for dental digital detectors. METHODS Mathematical expressions were derived to make it possible to construct PCs from viewer data obtained at two exposures, one low and one high. PCs were constructed applying these expressions and compared with data previously

Bayesian denoising in digital radiography: A comparison in the dental field

Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics, 2013
We compared two Bayesian denoising algorithms for digital radiographs, based on Total Variation regularization and wavelet decomposition. The comparison was performed on simulated radiographs with different photon counts and frequency content and on real dental radiographs.

Quantitative subtraction with direct digital dental radiography.

Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, 1997
To elucidate the accuracy in vitro of quantitative digital subtraction for direct digital dental radiography using a commercially available image analysis system.Images were corrected first for dark current and sensitivity variation among pixels of the CCD sensor (first correction), and corrected further for interimage variations due to the variations ...

A comparison of digital and film radiography in Dutch dental practices assessed by questionnaire. [PDF]

open access: possibleDentomaxillofacial Radiology, 2002
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to assess the experiences of general dental practitioners (GDPs) with solid-state and storage phosphor digital sensors compared to film. METHODS In a mail survey 578 questionnaires were sent to Dutch GDPs who were users of digital X-ray detectors and film.

Digital radiography in general dental practice: a field study

Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, 2007
The aim of this study was to conduct a field study to survey the performance of digital radiography and how it was used by dentists in general dental practice.19 general dental practitioners were visited at their clinics. Ambient light (illuminance) was measured in the rooms where the monitors were placed.

Real-time sensing of tooth position for dental digital subtraction radiography

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1991
Dental digital subtraction radiography requires accurate repositioning of the patient and X-ray source in order to facilitate correct diagnostic of bone loss. Present mechanical repositioning systems do not allow radiography of posterior teeth, and are uncomfortable for the patient.
