Planetary Protection Concerns During Pre-Launch Radioisotope Power System Final Integration Activities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator (ASRG) is a next-generation radioisotope-based power system that is currently being developed as an alternative to the Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG).

U.S. Space Radioisotope Power Systems and Applications: Past, Present and Future [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Radioisotope power systems (RPS) have been essential to the U.S. exploration of outer space. RPS have two primary uses: electrical power and thermal power. To provide electrical power, the RPS uses the heat produced by the natural decay of a radioisotope

Gold Nanoparticles Loaded With Lutetium‐177 Labeled DOTA‐TATE Exhibit Superior AR42J Cell Affinity and Extended Blood Circulation in AR42J Tumor Xenografts

open access: yesNano Select, Volume 7, Issue 2, February 2026.
The present study reports the development of a gold nanoparticle‐based delivery system functionalized with the established radiopharmaceutical [177Lu]Lu‐DOTA‐TATE. This design aims to enhance tumor‐targeting efficacy and improve the overall in vivo pharmacokinetic profile. In vitro studies demonstrated enhanced specificity toward somatostatin receptor (

Revised History of Pleistocene Vertical Motions in NE Sicily and Southern Calabria, Italy, From 40Ar/39Ar Dating and Fault Zone Morphology

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 45, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Long‐term rates of crustal uplift in southern Calabria and NE Sicily are incompletely understood due to limited information about the age of marine terraces at 1.0–1.3 km above sea level (asl). This study provides a new constraint on high‐elevation terrace ages through integrated analysis of geochronology, stratigraphy, shoreline modeling, and

Platinum Group Alloy Containers for Radioisotopic Heat Sources

open access: yesPlatinum Metals Review, 1979
The conversion of heat energy, resulting from the decay of plutonium-238 dioxide, to electrical energy for spacecraft requires alloys capable of containing the isotopic fuel at temperatures up to about 2000°C and of withstanding impact velocities of 90 metres per second.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FUEL COMPOUNDS AND ENCAPSULATION MATERIALS IN RADIOISOTOPE HEAT SOURCES [PDF]

open access: yes, 1963
The properties of radioisotope fuel compounds and fuel capsule materials which are pertinent to the design and operation of radioisotope heat sources are outlined. These properties are grouped into the following categories: intrinsic, extrinsic, and compatibility.

Failure analysis of radioisotopic heat source capsules tested under multi-axial conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1976
In order to qualify small radioisotopic heat sources for a 25-yr design life, multi-axial mechanical tests were performed on the structural components of the heat source. The results of these tests indicated that failure predominantly occurred in the middle of the weld ramp-down zone.

4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase in malaria parasites and enhances atovaquone efficacy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 600, Issue 2, Page 251-266, January 2026.
Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...

The program at JPL to investigate the nuclear interaction of RTG's with scientific instruments on deep space probes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
A major concern in the integration of a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) with a spacecraft designed to explore the outer planets is the effect of the emitted radiation on the normal operation of scientific instruments. The necessary techniques

Biocatalytic Construction of a Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer Magnetic Resonance Imaging Nucleoside Probe: Synthesis and Evaluation of 5‐Methyl‐5,6‐Dihydrothymidine

open access: yesAdvanced Synthesis &Catalysis, Volume 368, Issue 1, January 2026.
Al‐Hilfi et al. present a biocatalytic strategy for synthesizing 5‐methyl‐5,6‐dihydrothymidine (5‐MDHT), a sensitive MRI contrast agent. The study demonstrates that recombinant enzyme catalysis offers an efficient, sustainable, and eco‐friendly alternative to traditional chemical synthesis for producing clinically relevant imaging probes.
