Nuclear power in New Zealand: Attitudes and prospects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Traditional New Zealand attitudes with regard to all things nuclear are subjected to critical scrutiny. It is argued that these may frequently lead us to take policy positions that do not best serve our national interests.

Critical monitoring and control factors for achieving food defense criteria

open access: yesRisk Analysis, EarlyView.
Abstract Food can be contaminated by physical, chemical, biological, and radiological hazards. Industry and regulatory agencies have developed the Food Safety Management System, based on the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, to be effective against unintentional food safety risks. However, there is the intentional contamination

Assessing the risk from the depleted uranium weapons used in Operation Allied Force [PDF]

open access: yesScience and Global Security, Volume 8:2, pp.162 (1999) see also: http://www.princeton.edu/~globsec/publications/SciGloSec.shtml, 1999
The conflict in Yugoslavia has been a source of great concern due to the radiological and toxic hazard posed by the alleged presence of depleted uranium in NATO weapons. In the present study some worst-case scenaria are assumed in order to assess the risk for Yugoslavia and its neighboring countries .

Increased Brain Age Among Psychiatrically Healthy Adults Exposed to Childhood Trauma

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
We investigated the associations between childhood trauma exposure, including subtypes of abuse and neglect, and brain age in psychiatrically healthy adults. Brain age was predicted from T1‐weighted structural MRI scans using a machine‐learning‐based algorithm. Childhood sexual abuse was associated with increased brain age.

Learning Semi-Structured Representations of Radiology Reports [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Beyond their primary diagnostic purpose, radiology reports have been an invaluable source of information in medical research. Given a corpus of radiology reports, researchers are often interested in identifying a subset of reports describing a particular medical finding. Because the space of medical findings in radiology reports is vast and potentially

A review of accident models and incident analysis techniques

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 26, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract This review article aims to provide an overview of accident models and incident analysis techniques in the context of radiation oncology. Accident models conceptualize the mechanisms through which accidents occur. Chain‐of‐event models and systemic models are two main categories of accident models and differ in how accident causation is ...

Depleted-Uranium Weapons: the Whys and Wherefores [PDF]

open access: yesin A. Gut, B. Vitale, and P.Low, "Depleted uranium" (Spokesman, Nottingham, 2003, ISBN 0-85124-685-0) 126--158., 2003
The only military application in which depleted-uranium (DU) alloys out-perform present-day tungsten alloys is long-rod penetration into a main battle-tank's armor. However, this advantage is only on the order of 10%, and it disappears when the comparison is made in terms of actual lethality of complete anti-tank systems instead of laboratory-type ...

Using Multi-modal Data for Improving Generalizability and Explainability of Disease Classification in Radiology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Traditional datasets for the radiological diagnosis tend to only provide the radiology image alongside the radiology report. However, radiology reading as performed by radiologists is a complex process, and information such as the radiologist's eye-fixations over the course of the reading has the potential to be an invaluable data source to learn from.

Hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) combined with dihydroartemisinin (DHA): No synergistic effect observed in a preliminary animal study

open access: yesPrecision Radiation Oncology, Volume 9, Issue 1, Page 54-60, March 2025.
Subcutaneous xenografts were formed after colorectal cancer cells CT26 inoculation in nude mice, followed by a preliminary animal study in four groups: (1) control; (2) dihydroartemisinin (DHA), a potential natural anticancer drug; (3) radiotherapy (RT); (4) DHA+RT (n = 6 per group).
