Chemotherapy as an Adjuvant to Radiotherapy

1967
The rationale of combining a chemotherapeutic agent with radiation therapy can be on one of two hypotheses: 1. Agents like 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or 5-bromodeoxyuridine (5-BUdR) have been shown to be radiation sensitizers (Bagshaw, 1961; Berry and Andrews, 1962; Bosch et al., 1958; Djordjevic and Szybalski, 1960, Kaplan et al., 1961, 1962 ...

The role of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy for cholangiocarcinoma

Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology, 2015
Cholangiocarcinomas are rare cancers arising from the epithelia of the biliary tract. The only prospect of curative therapy is with surgery. However, relapse rates are high with five-year survival rates typically around 20-30%. Involved resection margins and spread to local lymph nodes are associated with a higher risk of relapse.

Adjuvant radiotherapy in resectable pancreatic carcinoma

European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO), 2002
Pancreatic cancer is a near fatal disease. External beam radiotherapy and intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) has been proposed with the aim to improve clinical outcome in resectable tumors. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and outcome in patients with cT1-3 pancreatic cancer, treated with surgery, external beam radiotherapy and ...

INDICATIONS FOR ADJUVANT RADIOTHERAPY IN ENDOMETRIAL CARCINOMA

Hematology/Oncology Clinics of North America, 1999
This article examines the impact of prognostic factors, adjuvant therapy, and randomized trials on the overall survival of patients with endometrial cancer. The potential role of radiation therapy as an adjuvant therapy, as well as the role of lymph node dissection, in the treatment of endometrial carcinomas is reviewed.

Adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy in ampullary cancers

European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO), 2005
Patterns of failure following surgical treatment of ampullary cancers indicate that up to 45% of patients develop loco-regional recurrence. The effect of adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy on survival and loco-regional control is not yet established in this malignancy. From January 1989 to December 2000, 113 patients underwent pancreatico-duodenectomy for ...

Overview of Adjuvant Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer

1988
Two papers by Cuzick et al. (1987 a, b) have recently been published in which mortality results from all available mature randomized trials of adjuvant radiotherapy are updated and analyzed collectively. Briefly, these overviews, which were based on individual patient data for over 10000 patients with more than 6000 deaths, showed conclusively that ...
