Rahnella aquatilis Bacteremia in a Patient with Relapsed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

We report the case of a 46-y-old African-American male with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia who had R. aquatilis bacteremia after beginning reinduction chemotherapy. He was treated for 4 weeks with piperacillin-tazobactam and gentamicin.

Rahnella aquatilis bacteremia in an HIV-infected intravenous drug abuser
Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, 1995Rahnella aquatilis, an unusual enteric Gram-negative rod, was isolated from three of four blood cultures of an HIV-infected intravenous drug abuser. The outcome was favorable after a 14-day course with ciprofloxacin. [Comparative characterisation of lipopolysaccharides of Rahnella aquatills].
Mikrobiolohichnyi zhurnal (Kiev, Ukraine : 1993), 2010Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of eight strains of R. aquatilis isolated from different sources have been studied. The studies of neutral monosaccharide composition evidence that all of LPS contain galactose (13.4-68.5%), glucose (5.7-29.8%) and heptose (2.6-8.3%) (depending on strains).

[Isolation and characterization of Rahnella aquatilis lipopolysaccharides].
Mikrobiolohichnyi zhurnal (Kiev, Ukraine : 1993), 2004Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of six strains of Rahnella aquatilis isolated from freshwater reservoirs, plant rhizosphere, and from patient have been investigated. It was shown, that LPS of type strain was characterized by the presence of rhamnose and mannose as predominant monosaccharides, while LPS of the rest strains contained galactose and fucose.

Clinical and microbiological characteristics of Rahnella aquatilis strains isolated from children
Journal of Infection, 1996We report the microbiological characteristics of two Rahnella aquatilis strains isolated in the faeces of two patients with acute gastroenteritis, one of whom is an AIDS patient. [Characteristics of structure components of Rahnella aquatilis lipopolysaccharides].
