The History and Ideas of George Herbert Mead's Pragmatism and Its Relevance for Operational Research and Systems Thinkers

open access: yesSystems Research and Behavioral Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT George Herbert Mead is an oft forgotten or ignored American philosopher who was one of the originators of pragmatism. Today, he is recognised as a creative thinker who has teased out knotty problems that others in the field had not realised were problems. Understanding Mead's analysis has been made difficult because he died prematurely without

Analysis of kinematic and energy parameters of electric locomotive wheel–rail adhesion

open access: yesВестник Научно-исследовательского института железнодорожного транспорта
Introduction. Electric locomotive wheel–rail adhesion is determined by various parameters (kinematic and energetic) that affect the mass and speed of the train, energy consumption, etc.

Minimization of Porosity in E11018‐G Low‐Alloyed Steel Processed by Laser Powder Directed Energy Deposition

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
The processability of the E11018‐G by laser powder directed energy deposition (LP‐DED) is investigated. The effects of powder moisture, ambient humidity, and laser remelting on LP‐DED parts’ porosity are shown. A strong influence of the atomizing gas is observed.

The clashing of in situ and pre‐cast technologies—Western trends and local traditions in concrete engineering shaping shell construction in 20th‐century Hungary

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract After a blossoming pre‐World War II (WWII) period, the concrete construction industry in then‐socialist Hungary existed in a relative isolation from the Western World during the mid‐20th century. In this paper, we focus on the body of work of one of the then newly established state‐owned design offices, IPARTERV, to show how the isolation ...

Experimental study on the impact of traffic‐induced vibrations on early‐age concrete

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract The COUNT (Concreting under Traffic) research project systematically examined the effects of traffic‐induced vibrations on early‐age, hardening concrete—a critical issue for bridge construction and renovation. Traffic closures are often imposed during such projects to mitigate potential damage from vibrations.
