Slope stability issues of rainfall induced landslides
2020The slope stability issues concerning rainfall induced landslides have been investigated and are presented. The results of numerical analyses performed using a two-dimensional finite element code for unsaturated seepage are used in determining the decrease in soil suction during infiltration as well as the development of positive pore pressures ...

Briefing: Rainfall-induced landslides in Singapore
Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Geotechnical Engineering, 2001Minor, shallow landslides have occurred frequently on the island of Singapore. However, very few major landslides (greater than 10 m in height) have occurred. Slope failures in the sedimentary Jurong and granitic Bukit Timah formations have occurred largely on slopes with angles greater than or equal to 27°.

Precipitation transformation in rainfall-induced landslide forecasting
2010 18th International Conference on Geoinformatics, 2010Precipitation is an important meteorological element widely used in rainfall-induced landslide forecasting. Most existing studies on rainfall-induced landslide forecasting focus on the determination of forecasting models and parameters. Five transformation methods of precipitation are evaluated in this paper to improve the forecasting models through a ...

SUSCEPTIBILITY MODELLING OF RAINFALL INDUCED LANDSLIDES
2013Occurrence of rainfall induced landslides coincides in time with the period of high persistence of heavy wet spells and in spatial locations where vegetative cover has been denuded. As the rain water percolates into the slope it increases the soil water content and reduces in situ suction, followed by built-up of pore water pressures resulting in a ...

Regional Approaches in Forecasting Rainfall-Induced Landslides
2020Hydrogeological hazards now exacerbated by the ongoing climate change pose serious challenges for the safety of the population worldwide. Among the others, the landslide risk can be mitigated by setting up efficient and reliable early warning systems.

Frequency–volume relation and prediction of rainfall-induced landslides
Engineering Geology, 2001Abstract Rainfall-induced landslides constitute a major public concern in Hong Kong. This paper investigates two aspects of critical importance to landslide hazard and risk assessment and management: magnitude–cumulative frequency relationship for landslides, and relationship between rainfall and the occurrence of landslides.

Rainfall Induced Landslides in Puerto Rico
2009Landslides are a major geologic hazard in the United States, typically triggered by rainfall, earthquakes, volcanoes and human activity. Rainfall-induced landslides are the most common type in the island of Puerto Rico, with one or two large events per year.

Centrifuge Model Tests of Rainfall-Induced Landslides
2015Rainfall-induced landslides and debris flows constitute very serious threats to human lives and infrastructure. In many cases, rainfall characteristics which cause the initiation of landslides are not very well determined and this might lead to the misunderstanding of the failure mechanism, the kinematic characteristics and the run-out distance of the ...

Approaches to rainfall-induced landslides forecasting
2012Rainfall still represents the most important triggering factor for landsliding. Both shallow and deep-seated landslides can be triggered and reactivated as a consequence of precipitations. This contribution presents a series of approaches that incorporate rainfall for the assessment of landslide hazard, modes of reactivation and expected displacements ...
